I don’t understand why we played a full strength team against manutd and then waste the chance and play a second team against everton. |
Different managers.
One thinks our only shot at sucess is in the cups and prioritizes those.
One seems to think that the silverware from cups doesn't matter (as I am asuming from the team selection).
You can argue for and against both positions, as long as you accept they are different. |  |

No doubt I will take pesters but glad we are out. Premier League must be our priority. Good effort from fringe players today, only mistakes stood between the two sides. In addition, no chance of being in Europe next season which is a great experience but would de harmful two seasons in a row IMO.
We were always likely to lose today. GM got it spot on for me. Gave players opportunities and rested important members e.g. Britton, Bony etc. |

Disappointed that we didn't have much to come back at them after the 2nd goal, but that wasn't a bad performance on the whole, especially considering that quite a few players are very much on the fringes of the first 11.
For me, I think Monk made a brave decision. Imo, barring injuries, a lot of those players were unlikely to get another game in the Premier League. Playing them might keep the full squad unified and it's giving him a chance to see what they can do. [Post edited 16 Feb 2014 15:42]

Although leroy lita has barely touched the ball he has tried harder than vasquez ever has. |
Apart from in front of goal (I know strikers have to score) I thought his link up play was very good. He needs to close down a lot more wisely though. Dyer had the full back pinned back and isolated with only the keeper to give the ball to , Vasquez should have gone straight to pressure the keeper. Instead the keeper got it and cleared it.
We just ran out of steam around 70 minutes, Pablo faded but overall had a good game. |  |

In the end felt much as I did at the start — that given a stronger team they were there for the taking and we could have been moving forward. Disappointed as was really optimistic about this game and done well to get to this stage. A positive result would have had us buzzing.
Credit to the players that were on, some nice play 1st ½ play. Hope the mistake does not take Taylor’s confidence away (similar to Ash’s brace of passes last season). Ash should have done better for the pen. Stupid scrappy 1st goal too.

Ok here's some positive thoughts. We played away to one of the top 6 strongest teams in the PL, maybe even the top 4, with a scratch team and, until we shot ourselves in the foot after an hour were just as likely to pinch it as they were. Even though we lost, our new manager has clearly instilled a different, and imho better, way of playing throughout the entire squad, and a couple of the performances of our rookie centre backs looked very promising. By losing, we have avoided another trip to Emirates or Anfield in an already ovecrowded season.

Exactly. The only difference was two bad defensive mistakes. You could have had Messi in that team and it wouldn't have made any difference to Richards' tackle or Taylor's suicidal back pass.

I'd say yes - Coleman (?) was given a beautifully weighted pass, the first Taylor had made all game, so the goalkeeper has to come for that.
Although I rate GT as an excellent keeper he should have made a better effort by closing down the shooting opportunity or coming out quicker. | |

Regarding Lita, I felt he was lucky not to get a red with his late tackle. Never looked like he was going to get the ball.

Can't take many positives from that I'm afraid. If we fielded that side every week we wouldn't get many Premier League points. That team selection has raised the first questions about Monk's judgement. it is hugely disappointing to forego the chance to get to the quarter finals of the FA cup with such a tame surrender. I'm of the same opinion. Especially since we've beaten both LFC and Arsenal before, so it's not like it is impossible for us against either team if we had managed a win against Everton.

Yeah, his cross for the goal was rubbish wasn't it.
Bartley was generally encouraging for 30 minutes, but gave away a goal. Taylor was solid until he gave them a goal, dealing well with Coleman and Mirallas (remember what Coleman did to Davies at the Liberty) with little support from Lamah and he provided a goal.
I wonder what game some people are watching sometimes. |  |
