| News Comment | Southampton V West Ham United The Verdict at 15:26:22
Yes, an encouraging performance - in another normal season, the result would be seen as "one of those days" - where you create loads of chances, fail to convert any, but concede a scrappy goal. This season is different of course and that goal was one more nail in the coffin. But what was most encouraging - having a manger who immediately recognised that sees that we needed a tougher, bigger more combative spine with the ability and strength to hold the ball up. The contributions from Les and Paul made all the difference and for the first time in ages we actually looked like we might find the net, though sadly not this time. We may yet upset a few teams this season and definitely pick up a few more points and perhaps set ourselves for a quick return with a squad and coach able to cut it in the PL. |

We may have some decent options with defenders, but certainly not with attackers. One of AA's attributes was pace - but he doesn't seem able to cut it in the PL. Jury is out on CA but he needs to be paired alongside a bigger, stronger presence. The tactic (if it was intended as such) of Ramsdale hitting goal kicks straight out of play, or in the general direction of Aribo just went to prove that we don't have a single player capable of winning the ball or holding it up front. Or do we? |

The key to our very remote chance of survival rests on any positive transfer activity. The regular players in the team have mostly shown that they are ill equipped for the PL, and while a fresh manager may be able to get some improved performances, and maybe reduce the propensity for humiliating defeats, without a striker or two who can and will score goals at this level we will continue to flounder in the depths. |
