Sorry but tend to think that we are blaming the wrong people for others peoples bad descions. I really think it is a bad idea to have a sole centre forward tiring themselves out to chase the ball down that is being stroked by a couple of players including the goalkeeper, if the press is really committed to then the full team needs compete for every ball played and not let it be stroked around at ease.As long as we are organised defensively let the goalies come out as far as he likes, they soon get nose bleeds coming out far up the pitch even over committing forward.
Vipotnik is never going to do what is being asked of him and be effective in a goal scoring sense, look at the change in Cullen once that he was relieved of that duty, Vipotnik has started scored with the meager service supplied but has had to hold the ball up for the none effective or existent support

I hoping with allthe talk of needed transfers the likes of Bianchini and Vipotnik are given more time to develop, a better service I'm sure would help them, some of the service to them has been poor and at best inconsistent little chipped balls badly placed and differcult to control as they tmove trying to find space and like many of our forwards their runs down channels have largely been opportunities missed. Cabango last season played a number excellent number of balls to Ronald as opposed to the forced ones into the middle of the park in crowded areas.
Ronald when he first arrived was fed balls quickly at almost every opportunity now every ball to Ronald seems to have to go through a full back standing two yards away or the full back has to run 10 yards before he is prepared to pass the ball which is slowing down their service dramatically, perhaps it is slowed down to get some support in the middle.
Let's not throw the likes of Bianchini and Vipotnik on the dustbin just as they are starting to find their feet in a pretty dysfunctional team at rhe moment.

Cabango to be revealed as signing a new contract tomorrow ?

Can we afford to keep giving away quality midfield players, If you can bring in two good midfielders for the money paid but don't think we can afford to leave him go otherwise because in the playing department we are looking toothless in the midfield.

Good to get that one over the line.

Would like our Centre halves more combative under the high ball meaning we end up going forward instead of backwards and also reduces the need for the midfield to drop deep, it takes its toll on the legs especially if you are expecting the midfield to do both the dropping deep thing and getting forward to support the forwards be it in a press or in powerful dynamic attacking role.

The folly of selecting Grimes
at 11:19 24 Dec 2024

He did get a settled team going with Patino, Paterson and Grimes each offering themselves in the midfield but we set up defensively against Leicester and no-one would say those three are the best playing defensively but others ""didn't"" have the experience to counter their attack, he dropped the inexperienced Platino don't think we played well again after that.
Young inexperienced players are always going to make mistake even if they are playing in their preferred position but as with Guehi you shouldn't cast them aside after one bad preformance, for me that descion ended with the demise of Duff because he lacked any other viable alternatives.

Edited to read "Didn't" (see quotation mark in the text) as often happens while writing auto corrects to "did" which makes no sense at all.

Played him on the left side of the back three with Brabdiy Cooper in the middle and kept eft footed Rhys Williams on the right against Brighton in the cup if I remember rightly also played him on the left, middle and right of a back three with very little protection for the flanks, when Darling and Wood arrived alternated them along the back line with Naughton and even though they had a run of good games would rejig the team when one bad loss suffered against good teams, very little continuity in the back line which I would say Darling, Wood and Cabango suffered because of.

With William's he has had a level of continuity but in William's endeavour to find a working attacking option the defence has suffered when there was very little wrong with the back line except the fullback being asked to push forward to compensate for deficiencies in other areas of the pitch.

Yes and that was why the good old fashion Sweeper was used to protect the centrehalf who would be used primarily attack the ball in the air matching a big burly centre forward who do seem to be used by lots in the Championship.

Carbango does quite well be it aerially in the middle, protecting that right front post being in the correct position (maybe not so good the left post) and for all his lack of turning speed has often been in a position to come from the centrehalf position to ensure the lack of progress by the wingers, he is capable of playing some nice through ball with the correct weight on them more so if the ball is being around by us at a high tempo and this season seemed a bit more nimble on his feet able to get the ball out from under his feet quicker

but
Lately any confidence he did have seemed to has evaporated, looks as if he is questioning his descions now.

But
In his defence that critism can be levelled at any number of players after the last few games, that confidence needs to be regained by a couple of good results.

You don't need creativity to throw the ball into the opposition's box, you have already gained an advantage of being in control of the ball in the opposition third. Instead we give that advantage away by keeping possession and ending back with the keeper which was the original position you trying to gain an advantage from.

You can help creativity by getting the ball quickly in the box or down the channels with balls you can run onto or then having the support of players with good movement off the ball.
Key's goal last year was a n example Lowe getting a well chosen clearance into space down the line, Lowe looked to be heading into a avenue that was being closed off but with Key's support, one pass along the ground to the oncoming player, who with one touch beat the static defender and another to score.

It doesn't always need five or six touches of a ball to be creative, if someone is taking that many they usually get closed down, often it is the winning of the ball in tight places, quick passes to get out of those tight place to players who offer themselves in space with good movement.

I think that freedom to act quickly is being stifled, one by the opposition as would be expected of the, two by playing too deep, three our set up is wrong and four the fear of losing possession.
That fear is killing any creativity.

Thought he worked quite well with Cooper they were able to win a good amount of possession with their work rate and offered movement further up the pitch, weren't afraid of running with the ball into the box which created pressure on defenders and opened up space for the likes of Piroe, Neither Cooper or Cundle were natural finishers but they caused problems, it does seem as if we think we can pass the ball around the edge of the box without trying to take opposition defenders on, might why a number of us myself wanted see Key further up the pitch trying to do it rather than deep in our half.
Would Cundle be a better long term option compared to Fulton or even Allen?

Expected to be more defensive away from home but five at the gives away too much in the middle of the park, a simple four at the back four would allow at least 2 midfielders the middle, wingers should tuck in, Cullen didn't drop back into a good defensive shape, he hasn't quite grasped his defensive role needed as the home team pushes on, can't remember if it was the first or second goal but we got the marking wrong on the edge of the box.
Tuck the wingers in so they can feed off our centreforward not leaving him totally isolated.

If a system works then a certain amount of repetition is not necessary a bad thing but if it doesn't work why continue we have seen a number of away games that we have conceded early, fought our way back into games and gone on to win, Saturday seemed as if all the fight was gone or was it a case that Hull were just better setup to counter our play, we put a couple of high balls into the box and they looked rattled but the slow stuff was easily countered.

Someone mentioned that the more times you do the same thing the percentage of times you get it wrong increases but then you have to add the fact that opposition teams know what you are going to do then they can anticipate it so it increases the percentage of times you get in wrong. This is affecting not just Vigouroux's kick out but our general play and if you do it in your own defensive third of the pitch them if the opposition decides to press you that percentage also increases again making getting it wrong almost a certainty.
It comes to a point as a fan that you know the opposition is going to score against us it is totally demoralising imagine what it is doing to the players and manager.

So how about playing the ball into areas we know we can compete and not into areas that we know we will be over run.
We have shown against Leeds and Sunderland we can score goals but in trying to play that way we also gave away a bucket load expecting our main elements of our attack to be our fullbacks, it is crazy, our main elements of attack should be our forwards and if you are slow in getting it to them the defences can get organised and shut us down and boy oh boy did Hull do that!
How many times did did we have the chance to get the ball forward quickly but didn't, preferring to play it backwards inviting pressure that eventually told.
The very percentages we talk about for making mistakes in defence equally apply to the opposition and yet we don't play in a way that reduces our percentage of mistakes and increases the opposition's.The playing of the ball in tight situations is all about the best way of getting out of it not further into it.
How often do we see Vigouroux or Grimes take the safe option but it usually means the safe options for the opposition. Every ball played has an element of risk but let us please let the risk be on the opposition more than us. A simple throw out to a fullback who has tracked back with a forward chasing a lost cause means the fullback can peal away to receive an easy throw out in front of him to run onto, it doesn't happen!
The playing the long ball up to our fullbacks who is tight on our winger is nonesense as it means that one opposition fullback if competent enough can take out of play both our fullback and winger it also means we are exposed on the flanks.
The quick ball over the top or in the channels should be one of our first weapons of choice not our last.

There was a reason that Cooper eventually stopped playing two up top in a 4-4-2 and went to a 4-5-1 playing three in the middle to stop opposition's progression while having Bidewell and Roberts out wide to protect the full backs, the complaint then we were too defensive so in the play off final he opted for Lowe.
Why did Cooper have to play three in the middle because we were weak in the middle with just the two defensive midfielders. Martin struggled even when playing four in the middle but two of those were attacking midfielders for example Ntcham and Paterson which did not help out in the defensive element of the game leaving two defensive midfielders struggling to preform their duties as the wing backs pressed forward.
We had and have what for me were and are young players in Downes and Franco that each helped out in that department but both cannot do the job without a better player alongside them if you are going to two in the middle, the most critised player has been playing a lot better this season but yesterday was noticeably poor when put under pressure.
He wasn't the only one but has the problem since relegation been we are defensively weak playing two in the middle with the players we have available, is that why Key pushes into the middle and we looked more solid defensively with Ollie Cooper as a third midfielder but that affected our attacking play. With Cardiff change in formation Cooper pressed on and the rest of the midfield didn't so we ended again defensively weak with the two holding midfielders. Against Wycombe in the cup it was over run.
