Japan/Tokyo advise

Smartphones have undermined the value of experience as in other things, but the pound is mysteriously stronger than it was then. Local prices have been rising for the first time in over 30 years, but now you only have to knock off three noughts and multiply by five to get the £ prcice, of knock off two noughts and halve it. Cardless payment prevalent in almost every area except public transport where you generally have to buy a ticket from a machine with cash…the tap and go terminals are for their Oyster equivalent only. Look for the gates that have a little slot to put your ticket it and remember to pick it up again.

The documentary “Salaryman” on (I think) Amazon Prime is a great introduction of the Tokyo I know pretty well.

Yesterday second half seemed to be the first time Nardi went all in on Begovic’s diagonal punt to Jimmy on the touchline after seeing Kolli get dispossessed so often back to goal. Not pretty but it gets us the ball in the opposition half more often than not.

On the subject of muscle, Kolli can’t really play as a back to goal lone striker. Time and again in the first half he was first to the ball but just lifted off it by strong defenders. Top marks for willing effort and I was delighted for him when he scored but it was noticeable that the goal was built around him rather than through him. It’s been Hobson’s Choice over the last few weeks making our form all the more remarkable but I think we’ll be even stronger with Chair, Frey and Paal back in the squad.

Paal’s corners so much better than the last couple of seasons too.

I was a bit frustrated for and by Saito today. He got very little ball to his feet in their half but I also think he drifted about so much he was hard for the others to locate. He didn’t have much influence on the game today.

Small sample size to go on, but I haven’t the foggiest idea what United saw in that goalkeeper.

Bertrand Russell was sent to Brixton Prison for six months in 1917 as a conscientious objector. His brother the Earl Russell visited him there and was delighted to renew acquaintances with some of the warders who had guarded him there 15 years before when he was serving time for bigamy.

William Patrick Hitler was born in Liverpool in 1911, son of Adolf’s brother Alois. Alois left the family to return to Germany and had another family. William joined him after leaving school but got into his uncle’s bad books after some press interviews and thought it safer to go home. He was turned down for service in the British armed forces because of his background, went to the US and initially had the same treatment before being accepted for service by the US Navy as a pharmacist’s mate.

Lincoln Cathedral was the tallest for about 400 years until they dismantled a spire there and let someone else have a go.

An earlier cathedral at Lincoln was destroyed by an earthquake in 1188.

Perhaps, but he’s a historical not fictional character. Not much point having a spoiler alert on Julius Caesar.

I haven’t but Mrs Sheen loved it.

On other matters ecclesiastical, Wolf Hall had a happy ending with that thieving Putney heretic getting it in the neck. Fantastic writing and performances.
