But surely the point is that points deductions are becoming fairly commonplace, and part of life in the Championship? You can’t remove them to make a point if they have impacted relegation/survival in prior seasons. Personally I don’t recall anyone bandying around points totals in the high 50s to stay up last season. I recall people saying 50-53, which seems entirely reasonable. My guess will be 46 will keep you up this year. |

Over the last 10 years you needed the following to stay up (ignoring GD) 2023/24 - 51 points 2022/23 - 45 (although Cardiff were 21st on 49) 2021/22 - 38 !! (although Reading were 21st on 41) 2020/21 - 44 2019/20 - 49 2018/19 - 41 (although Millwall were 21st on 44) 2017/18 - 42 2016/17 - 52 (although Forest were 21st and stayed up on GD (2 goals) on 51 points. 2015/16 - 41 (although Rotherham were 21st and stayed up on 49) 2014/15 - 42 (although Rotherham were 21st and stayed up on 46) So over the last decade, you have only needed to reach 50 points twice, one of which was last year, so last season was undeniably the correct year to worry about the survival target. 7/10 years you would have stayed up with under 46 points, so less than a point per game. Basically, usually you have to be very sh*t to get relegated. It’s quite an achievement. |

Well, I disagree. Last year there was just logic in forecasting a high amount needed to survive. This year? Looking at the league, it would not surprise me if it could be a year where you stay up on a low total like 44. |

Who do we think will be involved in the relegation fight come March/April then? I suspect it’ll be the following: Portsmouth Plymouth Oxford Us Derby Preston At a push, maybe Stoke. I think the top two will drop. I think the 3rd spot will probably between us and Oxford. If we stay up would love to see Preston drop. Bored and tired of them. Sod’s Law if we go down they’ll come with us! |

How does Lampard keep getting jobs in the top two divisions?! |

Spot on. Said it elsewhere. The second stems from him tackling Willock when they were in a dangerous position. Tackles matter. You can transition to attacks when the opposition isn’t set when you make them. We still don’t make enough of them as a team. Cardiff made more tackles and more than double the number of fouls as we did, yet they were only out of possession for 32% of the game. We have been out tackled in almost every game this season. |

Shout out to Sam Field for the tackle on Willock, stopped their dangerous attack and started the move for our second. Tackles, they matter. |

Exactly. The second goal was encouraging. The first was obviously very good but felt like a touch/finish combo that does not go in 99/100. The second was the type of opportunity you have 5-10 times a season and he took it really well. What I would say is the way they play, I’d still always be staying Frey and have Celar as the replacement for the last 20. I think Frey’s all round game is still miles better and his physicality will help us gain footholds in matches. Celar is potentially a better bet on the counter in the last 20, if we’re holding on. |

Polter was half decent. But what I meant is why not £5 or £10 or £7.50, even £4 or £6? Whatever! But £7.35 is niche. Your maths must be excellent. |

Thank God for this result! Fair play to Celar. Excellent finishes. But we hung on there and we’re doing so by the skin of our teeth for much of that second half. And Nardi was our MoTM. Kept us in it. Loved Field’s reaction at the final whistle. Literally jumped for joy and punched the air. |

Spot on. We have lost all structure and any semblance of control we had. Just attack vs defence this. It is CARDIFF. They are 21st. |

I don’t think it’s infallible though, is it? If digitally tracked how has every piece of action been defined? There will be errors and grey areas. It’s inevitable, and given the volume of the data points is quite low, any errors at all can change how you interpret the data. If it’s a human, it’s very subjective. I agree it is useful broadly accurate. But it is there to inform analysis not dictate it. |

Smyth is having a stinker of a match here. Madsen’s corners keep hitting the first man. Cardiff are coming into this. I think I’d bring on Morgan too. |

Thanks, E17. Madsen Watch: 0 tackles and 0 interceptions. Varane and Field have 5 between them. They also have higher pass completion %s. I would be incentivising our squad with tackle bonuses. We need to incentivise the right behaviours. |
