http://www.toffs.com/Rochdale-1985-1986-Retro-Football-Shirt/productinfo/1558/

I am quite interested in getting one of the toffs copies of the famous watering can shirt and was wondering if anyone had an accurate squad list from the 85/86 season as I am considering getting a name/number printed on the back.

Not sure why you'd buy a retro shirt and then stick a name on the back when all they had were the traditional numbers back then. I can't remember but think it was a standard 1-11 plus 12-14 for the subs. Proper alte schule!

*Edit* I really like the shirt too. If you want to see one 'in the flesh' I think Tommo's brother Liam has one (spotted somebody near me wearing on at a couple of games last season), I'm sure he'd let you have a gander if you wanted to before buying one.

It was 1-11, then 12 for the one substitute that was used in those days.

This of course meant the same shirt could be worn by several different players throughout the season, especially as the team was probably supplied with only a small amount.

Aye. Mistyped my original post really. I wanted to see who probably had what number when they played then choose appropriately for just the number on the shirt.

Cheers for the heads up about tommo's brother.

It would be a nicer strip to wear as our "away "one for this season then the one we are going to use unless I have missed something along the way.

The problem with this season's away kit is the lack of a third colour ie. black. This would have then identified it as our away kit. White and blue on their own never looks right on any club away from home, just an opinion of course.

The shirt in the original link is slightly wrong too, the blue on the shirts isn't navy enough.

There endeth today's kit lecture. Homework to follow.

I had one as a present last year, was too big so swapped it for the new shirt. Seemed good quality though. Toffs are apparently in the process of making the 1968 replica for me - pretty bespoke, that ;)

On the subject of retro shirts, which one of you gits outbid me on eBay last week? Was purchasing an early 90s smith metals shirt and lost it at the last minute :(

Malcolm first arrived late in the 88-89 season and was one of the players that went to Stockport under Bergara. He never really impressed at Dale, and despite a screamer against us on Boxing Day the following season it was hard to understand why Sutton pursued him for so long in 91-92. From memory he arrived around the same time as Andy Kilner and others, possibly earlier, something which disrupted a squad that was doing perfectly well on its own without Sutton's insistence on adding to it. Stiles and Leonard were the final nail in the failed playoff coffin that season.
Sutton did similar with the like of Williams two years later - he was never happy, even when his team were performing. That was his downfall.

Tony Brown arrived under Terry Dolan in 89-90 and was a very good servant four seasons at the club). We'd be fine with a similar type of player now.

Bowden was one rare strange Sutton signing that worked, albeit not it the was the managed envisaged. Signed as a midfielder that we didn't really need after a great start in 91-92, he was in and out of the side and only really came into his own the next season as a utility man. His display at centre forward in a win at Shrewsbury was up there with anything you'll have seen from the likes of COG. Great at centre half too.

The Scunthorpe game you may be thinking of is the 6-2 defeat in Nov '91. Bowden was the only one to come out of it with credit; think he came on as a sub and scored twice.

My son puts that shirt over his school uniform while eating breakfast at his nan's. The messy get.

If it was last year it could have been me, as I bought one from 91/92 last year, but unfortunately over time, the sponsor has started to peel. I purchased the 70's shirt from Toffs instead a few months ago, great quality.

I always really liked the 1988-89 (i think) Danny Begara season home shirt (back to blue) it had small alternate shiny little rectangles in the pattern. The water-can was on a white square on the blue shirt for ultimate gardening product visual marketing. circa Chris Beuamont and Dave Frain et al and the rest of Stockport's late 80s and early 90s team.
