Pompey and Circumstance Match Fred on 17:31 - Feb 22 by BklynRanger
Off the boil in just about every area, and Southampton should cover Edwards' loan fee for exposing him to that character building lesson on our time.
Marti didn't seem to be looking to shake their manager's hand at the end.
A total bag of shyte we need to move on from.
We don't need to 'move on' - we need to sit and stew in everything that went wrong today, and why, and try to use it to improve to regrow a spine and some balls. I hope Marti kept the players behind for a long debrief after that fiasco with a few thrown cups, and, after that, the board/owners did the same with MC and Mr Calm. The lack of hunger and competitiveness today, especially in our promising position, was a real slap in the face for the travelling fans, not to mention the non-travelling ones.
We deserved nothing today. Didn't start playing until Dunne scored and then mainly because Pompey dropped to defend their lead. Too many bad performances and little cohesion or rhythm. We can play so much better than that, and I'm sure we will in the games coming up.

Sitting and stewing is probably the first part of moving on

I think we've improved a bit, but it is built on sand and that is why I don't get excited by 4-0 wins against third bottom Derby.
Our midfield is fckin awful. And QPR should not be playing like a 1980s Wimbledon tribute act.
Well said! It was a good performance and nice goals against a poor Derby, but some people here went way over the top about it, and, predictably, pride/self-praise commonly precedes a fall. Especially in this industrial league.

I think that was my point. We 'move on' by, uh, not moving on!
I 'uh' disagree - we go over the required neurotic learning points that you're going to over post about for the next 3 hours, and on the training pitch when they get back in.
Then we move on, like 'uh' normal people.

Totally agree with you both.
Can't be bothered posting much at the moment but I thought that the Chair worldy set us on the way against Derby but without it I think it would have been a much closer game.

I was a bit concerned by Marti's interview in The Independent as he spoke about letting players get on with it when they're on the pitch. It certainly felt like that today - just boot it aimlessly onto their defender's head and repeat. Slow to make subs too. Would have liked to see some changes at half-time but we came out even more passive in the second half.
Not good for a newly promoted team to be taking six points off us, particularly with Dozy Dozzell in their side.

Thanks for the supercilious 'lesson for the day', clarifying your own role as a 'normal' arbiter of decent levels of posting on a football messageboard set up for people to post on as and when they see fit, and, all in all, coming over as a bit of a d*ck.
PS Re 'normal people', you remind me of Peter Sellers' detective in the first film of Lolita - but without the irony and genius!

I'd really like to see Morgan back in the team. He's our most positive CM.
When Morgan, Varane and Field play as a three, we play well - against most teams.
They compliment each nicely and it provides a great base to play around.
When they played together, we performed well. We won more regularly and played more consistently.
Somehow, somebody has decided to meddle with that formula and now we don’t know what we are going to get from week or week.
Fees like we’ve gone back to a system to accommodate our diddy men at the expense of losing the midfield. Fine for Derby at home - not so good for several other teams and away from home.
Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

In my view, the preview already predicted the outcome. The new modus operant with Chair as a ‘10’ is part of the experiment to open up the midfield. I think it works but the weak point is Up top, not the midfield. That said I also think Yang is a step up and should be sen more going forward. I still think a top 6 finish is there for the picking.

Portsmouth' record in last 11 home fixtures:
Won 8, drew 2, lost 1. If that is not doing well at home then I don't know what is.
Our record in the gold mess is played 6 won none. Bear in mind we have won a couple of away games not wearing it.

Yes, you're right, and I'm wrong, on recent form at least. But I still think over-emphasising their good home form probably impacted our mentality negatively. A good team with good players and a confident coach with a proper game plan (think our 3-1 win at Anfield in 1991 or that glorious 4-1 spectacle at Manure) goes and takes the game proactively to the opposition, competes properly, and plays to its strengths. Plus, it's f*cking Portsmouth, 17th in the Championship, not Paris St Germain (and we've been, what, 4th ourselves or thereabouts over the last 10 games or so)!
Obviously, it's just speculation, but when I look at a game like that, which we seemed monumentally and moronically determined to lose, and the Leicester cup game, and that shocker at Swansea, I really worry there's more to it than meets the eye.

I disagree with Clive's preview. We haven't improved this season: we're very easy to beat by basic teams like Portsmouth, our best player is a loanee and we still haven't got a decent striker.
This season is a real missed opportunity. Thought we were appalling today and played into their hands by booting the ball in the air all game.
Of course we've improved. We were 5 points from safety to comfortably safe. That statement is just patently wrong.

If they're also 'compl-I-menting each other nicely', couldn't this be part of our problem - they're a bit too cosy with each other! ;-)

After today, with your optimism, I'll have whatever drugs you're on, sir!

Of course we've improved. We were 5 points from safety to comfortably safe. That statement is just patently wrong.
As MC pointed out in his pre-match interview, we won 56 points last season. This season, with 12 games to play, we have 44pts, so we need four wins and a draw from 12 games to pip that total by a single point. You'd think we'd achieve that, but I don't necessarily feel we'll get a lot more. Gut says we'll probably finish with about 64 pts at best and finish somewhere around where we are now, so marginal improvement in terms of results.
Unless the squad is significantly upgraded next season, I foresee further mediocrity next year.
