All this Budget Speculation 23:28 - Oct 18 with 10137 views | JACKMANANDBOY | The plan seems to be to raise taxes like IHT and Capital Gains and maybe on Non-Doms etc. whilst changing the rules to borrow more. There a realistic risk here, if the tax income does not increase as planned, the very rich can work their way around these increases, and if growth is slow then the cost of borrowing increases as bond rates will go up as confidence is lost in the money markets and we will have a slow burn Liz Truss effect. With all that is happening in the World having some gold makes a lot of sense right now.

That money is there for security so they know they can pay for something essential if needed. In the grand scheme of things, it’s not a lot of money. |
If the roof needs raplacing? Depends on the reason why I guess, if it's damaged by extreme weather or bad workmen then claim on insurance. Parts of a roof may need work but the whole roof? I agree that 16k is too much, I think 10k is reasonable. Of course things can change depending on where you live. I read recently that people who lived in areas known to flood cannot get insurance anymore. in which case 30k seems more apt.

No worries. For the record any comment I make about benefits doesn't include state pension. Most people earn that and deserve every penny of it.
All this Budget Speculation on 22:01 - Oct 26 with 1135 views | majorraglan | A couple of weeks ago I attended at voluntary sector event where I spoke to a young girl aged around 20/22 about her volunteering work. The young lady explained that she was now working so her voluntary h work had reduced, but she had to be careful that her hours didn’t exceed 15 hours a week. The penny didn’t drop straight away, but the reference to 15 hours was so her benefits weren’t affected. She was happy to wrk 15 hours and do voluntary work on top, but didn’t want to work for more than 16 hours. This kind of stuff needs to be sorted, people who can work are choosing not to and are gaming the system. 🤬

Good old Gordon Brown and his working tax credits, the Dull Idiot could not see that people would limit their work to maximise their tax credits income or employers would hold down wages as the government will top up incomes. He should have simply increased the minimum wage gradually. He created the conditions for low wages and higher welfare bills.

Working people can be working class, middle class or upper class. Labour cannot define what working people are. Even Starmer likes to pretend he is working class despite his title.

One thing for sure. It’s a gamble with “ working people” being first on line if things go tits up. Massive increased borrowing is a gamble. Penny off a pint is a pitiful gesture and rather insulting NI insurance contributions will increase significantly and employers will be worried

Significantly? £120 a year extra on your average £30k a year to be paid by the employer. It's a little, but not significant.

You’re a Labour man . You post accordingly Yeah ,significantly Hope you aren’t one of those wealthy mid Wales farmers who will be leaving the family farm to siblings . She could have increased fuel duty immediately and also alcohol and betting tax .For a start . She could have cut the VAT on home chargers to encourage people to ditch internernal combustion engined vehicles [Post edited 30 Oct 14:36]

Lots of if’s and but’s there. Maybe the budget and strategy will deliver what she wants and costs will go down as revenue increases. I’m hoping that some of the budget finds its way in to improved infrastructure around the Brynglas tunnels. That could turbo charge growth in Wales. If I was Starmer I’d be telling Eluned Morgan to sort it because it’s things like the Brynhlas tunnels which will make or break investment in South Wales.

Aome people claimed taxes wouldn't rise but most could see they had too. The NI rise does worry employers, it's an extra cost to them and is forecast by the OBR to have a suppressing effect on wages going forward. I'm not really bothered by tax rises as to improve things, taxes absolutely had to rise. For improvements though, we also need the public sector to spend more wisely, to cut waste and then, politics should be looking to vut it's own costs, the gravy train needs controlling.
