So roughly 40,000 needed to vote the other way, so about the size off llanelli. Unless you think Llanelli is massive ? Thats under 2% of the welsh electorate. |
Well they did Killy. Llanelli IS massive to Turks

Hey Felix….. on 14:04 - Jul 24 by felixstowe_jack | No even when we were in the EU all visitors to the EU on departure from UK airports had to present passports and they also had to show them on arrival to the immigration officials. The only difference now is they stamp them instead of just looking at them and handing them back. French immigration checks were done at St Pancras before boarding the Eurostar and also at Folkestone terminal. This was as a result of a bilateral agree between France and the UK and had nothing to do with the EU. Strange how there are no delays at other UK ports and ferry terminal to other EU countries like Harwich, Felixstowe, Fishguard, Holyhead, Stranraer, Hull. Even the Other South Coast ports with ferries to Normany etc don't seem to be having a problem. Makes you why? |
So it’s just a coincidence then?

You really think it is adequate for the French Border force to only have 6 people on duty to check the passports for huge volumes of passengers? Clearly a political action by France. Funny how no queues at Calais where people travelling to the UK have to pass through passport control staffed by British border staff.

Not a political action - they only had 6 on duty because the others were late in getting to work, they went through the Chunnel and got caught up in the traffic jams. I’m terns of Calais, there are times when there are queues and there were some last weekend, but they were nothing on the scale of what we were experiencing. The major reason for the lack of delays is quite simple, British border control take a “light touch” approach to passport checks and our border force personnel do not stamp the passports of foreign visitors to the UK, by not stamping entry dates etc it makes it difficult to identify overstayers etc and it’s a case of us not taking control of our borders. The UK isn’t currently applying the checks it supposed to on imports from the EU either, it’s because we don’t have the boys resources or infrastructure in place. The EU have sorted their end out as we can see from the way they handle customs checks etc, but we’re behind the curve and unprepared.

The border checks between France and the UK actually have nothing to do with any EU agreement. The UK and France made a bilateral agreements to pass through border controls at the point of departure for Dover, Folkestone and St Pancras so that passengers using Eurotunnel, Eurostar services and Dover to Calais services wpuld have their passport checked on departure and therefore on arrival in France they could continue their Journey without further checks. It is clearly up to France to ensure it had enough border staff in place to do these checks. It is complete nonsense to say the French got stuck in the channel tunnel as Eurostar confirmed their were no delays with the service. Perhaps the UK could end the agreement between Dover and Calais and let the passport checks be done on arrival the French could not then use they excuse their border force was late for work. The French also blamed the Liverpool fans for the chaos in Paris for the European final. They have since of course offered a full apology for the failure to organise it properly.

If the border change is possible then why wasn’t it done? We’ve had 6 years to prep and there still seems to be no coherent plan forward - there’s even an acceptance that there’s some real short term pain to come.

You’re having a mare, why don’t you try reading things properly. I never said the French police were caught up in an incident in the Chunnel, they were late because they caught the shuttle across and got caught up in the traffic carnage resulting from the accident on the motorway and build up of traffic at Dover. 4 I know about the bilateral agreement and why it was implemented, it was primarily introduced as a result of representations from our government in an attempt to improve security snd reduce the number of migrants illegally entering the UK via Calais. There is a lot more room in Calais than Dover, if we’re to make any attempt at controlling our borders it makes sense to retain the current arrangement. The infrastructure at Dover isn’t good enough, something that the Port of Dover and National Audit Office recognised several years ago, the port even tried to improve their facilities via a £33m funding application to the Government’s Port Improvement Fund, however the application was rejected and the port were granted £33k - seems like lots of people could see the potential problems except the Government! The French did wrongly blame the Liverpool fans just as you’re incorrectly blaming the French. If we look across the UK it’s clear lots of our services are in a mess, policing, passports, Courts, Borders, NHS to name but a few, there’s 1 constant in all these and it’s out government. You always blame the EU, there are times they are at fault and need to be called out, but you need to look closer to home because the government in Westminster is a shambles. It is France that is in charge of passport control for visitors to France who else is to blame. Even village idiots like you can surely grasp that fact. If there were queues at passport control in Calais caused by lack of UK border staff the UK would be to blame.

We’ve explained to you about the queues last Friday, but it’s either a case of you don’t want to or are too stupid to understand the reasons. The bottom line is the French were late because some of their border security staff were caught in the traffic. That said, the infrastructure in Dover isn’t good enough, the Port of Dover recognised this and our current government refused to approve and the Port’s grant application to improve the infrastructure and number of passport booths in 2020. The Port and National Audit Office told them the infrastructure wasn’t good enough and there’d be huge issues. It’s likely to get even worse when the biometric checks come in to being. One of the reasons there are rarely queues in Calais is because our Border guards aren’t stamping passports - the UK doesn’t do the full checks and we just “risk manage” the process. Seems like we’re taking back control of our borders - not! I’m not a lover of the French and sticking up for them to be awkward, I’m pointing out the shortcomings on our side of the channel and the woeful performance we’ve seen from our government preparing for Brexit. Correct they deliberately decided to understaffed their own border post but some people just won't accept why the French decided to do this on the busiest day of the year. It is the French who are responsible for staffing their own border posts nobody else. To use the feeble excuse they got stuck in traffic is just not good enough they just did not fully staff all the available booths. [Post edited 30 Jul 2022 4:26]

The staff were in transit and caught up in traffic resulting from the gridlock caused by the volume and an accident on the M20. If they were deliberately understaffing the Port they wouldn’t have had the staff on route to be caught up in the gridlock.

What the report continues to omit that they did not have the full quota staff to man the booths so even if they had not been caught in the accident they would still not have had enough staff. They did not fully man the booths until late Saturday and Sunday when the backlog finally started to clear. This weekend fully manned, no hold ups despite it being the second busiest weekend for passengers. The passport control is the sole responsibility for the French authorities.

No extra queues in Dover since the French immigration officers got their act together. Despite peak holiday season any delays are back to normal. There have always been heavy demand at Dover during peak Holiday weekends that applied even when we were in the EU.

Hey Felix….. on 08:35 - Aug 16 with 1245 views | felixstowe_jack | That is the normal delay for peak holidays weekends especially on Saturday which is the day most car crossing happened that of course is due to Saturday being the changeover date for holidays. This happened when we were in the EU and still happens now it is due to peak demand. The same things happens at most airports where you are advised to arrive 3 hours before your flight. I do wish people would stop blaming normal queues caused by peak demand on Brexit. I guess you will be blaming the two hours to get from the Severn Bridges to the Brynglas tunnels at peak times on Brexit rather that poor infrastructure and inactivity for the last 20 years to sort it out.

For me that is the real problem, it's not that it has to be this bad it's more that our government are incompetent. Ye the French are being awkward too but we are adding to the problem, it's Ok to throw billions at bad PPE and not try to get it back but actually spend money where its needed< nah!
