There used to be a picture in the bar (it may still be there) of a Hornets team from around the 1990s that had around ten or so former Mayfield lads in it.
The links between the two clubs over the last 30 years or so have been good.

Despite being marketed as a Summer game, there is actually very little rugby in June each year.
Good for the players to go off and let their hair down I suppose - although what physical and mental condition they will be in when they cross the white lines again at Spotland remains to be seen. | |

Because of the entry of cornwall in the league there are an odd number in league 1 so each week has one team on a bye. Hornets bye is next week. The third weekend in June is international break.
Hornets are required to vacate spotland in June for the pitch so the bye and international break avoids them having four consecutive away games. But it doesnt do much for revenue. | | | |

Very poor from the Hornets hierarchy in a couple of ways.
First, attempting to sneak out the attendance well after the fixture in a week of half term and the Jubilee which, as you say pioneer, was very poor taking into consideration an away support element in that number.
Second, where are the marketing efforts for Hornets? Free tickets? Publicity? There is very little coming out of the Hornets media machine other than pictures of a tubby, grumpy looking Mazey who has no links with the town.

Perhaps Mr Mazey isn’t quite the businessman he portrays himself to be. Of course he could be
paid an excellent salary for his efforts and is prepared to put his money where

Just realised that it was a bit silly of him to refer to a catchment area of 200k.
That’s presumably the population of Rochdale MBC which includes places like Heywood and Middleton who couldn’t give a monkeys about Hornets or even rugby league in general.
Hornets historically drew their support from the old County Borough of Rochdale where population never went over 90000 people.
And they never really got above 10% of that apart from the boom days of the 1940s and 1950s when every spectator sport in the country enjoyed a boom period. | | | |

The interesting thing about that £177k of net assets at the end of November 2022 is that £81k of it is "goodwill" which is only really as good as the amount of money that someone would pay for Hornets it it was to be sold.
That leaves the £96k of net assets split out as follows:
+£12k - plant and machinery
+£105k - trade debtors
+£147k - cash
(£3k) - trade creditors
(£18k) - VAT and PAYE
(£149k) - "other" creditors
When you consider that the November date is selected as the point in a Rugby League season where next season's sponsorships are invoiced and next season's season ticket money collected that £96k has to last from November 2021 to September 2022 -10 months.
Or £9.6k per month without new money coming in.
Add in that Hornets don't make a penny on matchday other than attendees at their games and you can see what that suddenly gets tight if they are getting such a shocking crowd like at the Doncaster game and only a small number of other revenue generating opportunities.
There is no central funding anymore for Hornets and Rugby League is a dying game for TV money, being abandoned by the RFL unless you are one of the big Super League teams.
