Olympics thread on 09:24 - Jul 29 by Dr_Winston | Going to stick with my initial prediction of 10-15 Gold medals in total. Rowing is usually good for 2-3 and we haven't won any this time around yet. If track cycling stutters then we'll do very well to get near 20. Think we may do well in the boxing though. This seems to be a games too far for some and a games not far enough for others. Lots of younger competitors picking up Silver and Bronze so that bodes well for Paris. |
Your predictions are looking go so far.

Doing slightly better than I thought for Golds, although I'd have been staggered if we'd gotten anywhere near our Rio total. Still, it's a good spread amongst the colours with quite a few younger faces placing in the medals which as I said looks good for 2024. Clear work to do in the Track & Field / Rowing events though. Don't think we'll ever be as dominant in the Velodrome as we were. We stole a march on the world in 2008 and it's taken them two Olympic cycles to catch up. [Post edited 6 Aug 2021 10:14]

We might end up breaking 20. Was not expecting that. Lauren Price a heavy favourite in the boxing and Laura Kenny defending champion in the Omnium.

It's difficult with Athletics because unless you have huge pools of talent and funding like the US, China or Russia, or natural talent like Jamaican sprinters or the East African distance runners, barring the odd star athlete making it through the ranks we'll always find it tough to win Gold in track and field. Maybe it's somewhere that a more long term, grass roots approach is needed first. But there will be a few long, hard looks in certain areas. Rowing especially. Think this Games will show us where our long term future lies in the medal table. We had a hell of a boost for London which carried on into Rio, but it seems likely that we're going to settle in as comfortable top five contenders averaging 15-20 Golds and 50-60 medals in total. The back of my mind there is something about certain Olympic sports being ringfenced for funding. I'm sure athletics is one but not sure if its still in place.

Olympics thread on 23:34 - Aug 6 with 1051 views | britferry | Womens marathon is on, not in Tokyo, they gone to a cooler location, Sapporo. A couple of observations: - a lot of them are wearing white trainers with a pink trim. I think these are the new Nike trainers, they're a bit like what the Spice Girls used to wear but they've got a carbon insole or something and they enable you to run 2% quicker. I think Alberto Salazar was involved, so they're trying to ban them now... but sports like cycling have been doing the same with equipment for years - the drinks tables, why are they on one side of the road? they're falling over each other to get to them, why not have them as an island in the middle, the roads are wide enough Here you go, just for Lisa, Spice Up Your Life [Post edited 7 Aug 2021 0:00]

Well given the population of the USA and China we would easily top the table. We would even be able Japan twice our size. Another medal for Tom well done.

Massively encouraging to see an almost exact split between the colours in terms of numbers won. Speaks to excellent strength in depth overall.

Olympics thread on 11:34 - Aug 8 with 741 views | Catullus | So what event/sport did people enjoy the most? Personally I really enjoyed the BMX and skateboarding, the boxing and some of the cycling, the Madison is bonkers! The USa and China will always be top, they have big populations and put a lot on money into it. The Rissians should be higher but they always court controversy.
