Wife's family are all from Mayo, here's the info on the curse for those that don't know about it. The towns and villages of Mayo in Western Ireland are festooned with red and green, the colours of the county's Gaelic football team, which has again made it to the All-Ireland final on Sunday. Mayo has not won since 1951, despite reaching the final eight times since 1989. Can the team now lay to rest Ireland's most infamous curse? Mayo will converge on Dublin on Sunday, the sons and daughters of a county ravaged by emigration flocking to the city in the hope that their team will taste All-Ireland victory after a famine of 65 years No other county has such fervour for the country's most popular sport, but none either has known such an abysmal run of luck - a series of misfortunes so shocking that every Irish football-lover knows the story of the curse of Mayo. It dates back to the day in 1951 when a victorious Mayo team headed home to the west of Ireland from Dublin, after a comfortable win over Meath. The champions travelled with less pomp than today - making the journey to the evening's celebrations in the back of a truck. Legend has it that when they passed a funeral in the town of Foxford without stopping or paying respects, a curse was cast that Mayo would never again win the All-Ireland championship until all members of that team had died. True or not, they've not won since.

The Curse Of Mayo on 13:24 - Sep 17 with 5726 views | kingshill | Still 2 of the team alive so I believe? My mate and his wife from Donegal were over at Croke Park for the final against Mayo a few years ago. They were sat next to a Mayo man who was a paramedic. He said he'd had one of the two in his ambulance a few weeks before and had the devil on his shoulder telling him to let him go to give the team a chance........ | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Haven't got the time to explain, but from what happens around here, its something to do with Cinco de Mayo, the consumption of cerveza's and wildly firing into the air.

The Curse Of Mayo on 20:51 - Sep 18 with 5192 views | BrianMcCarthy | Two weeks lads. Replay is on Oct 1st. Mayo were boring and mindless in attack in the first half but their backs were superb. After the break the entire team was superb. Epic stuff. bad luck and bad refereeing cost them again. Dublin were haunted.

Bet Connolly feels bit of a plum taking that shot at the end today. Also first time watching it on Sky - was it me or was it crazy biased to Dublin? "Dublin aren't speaking to the media - that's a great move isn't it" "Oh yes, you don't want to give the oppo anything, they're straight into recovery so they'll be fresher" and my favourite "I guess we have to give some credit to Mayo I suppose"

that bad refereeing found them 7 minutes Brian which gave them hope. Kind of balanced itself out. There was one wwe clothesline by a Dublin player where I thought you could have easily have given him red. Awful decision to blackcard the Dublin player. The whole rte panel said that the mayo player in fact ran into his path and hit the deck.

Yep, that was the red card I was talking about. I agreed with the seven minutes. The ref could be see stopping his watch many times during the second half for injuries or supposed injuries. I thought McCarthy knew what he was doing with that black card (the ball was nowhere near them) and I'm surprised the RTE panel are bailing him out. I think that over the next fortnight Mayo will regret not taking their chances in the first half. Will be interesting to see how they react mentally. They may have hope as they clearly have a good manager. Still fancy Dublin to improve more though and take it.
