Swansea City : Friday night pre match : ‘We’ve been so unlucky’
Friday, 16th Sep 2022 16:12 by @cornish67david

If tomorrows SKY game at the swansea.com stadium is to be the turning point for Russell Martin it really must happen tomorrow. If we reflect back on the swans 1969/70 season with a start of two wins in nine that led to a third placed finish that season we have to have some hope.

Football is a game that throws up many statistics, and of course we can only look back, be that for a second or over fifty years. Nottingham Forest are the recent example, but of course they had to change their manager. And definitely no matter what any swans fans think surely the side have been exceptionally unlucky in front of goal ? Some would say of course incompetent, the chances spurned have been so frustrating. However, is this the game when things do turn round and we go in to the international break reenergised ?

Martin said today “Everyone’s extremely frustrated, we need to turn that frustration into energy and another performance. Even the supporters on Tuesday night were brilliant. Everyone can see the improvement over the last three or four games in terms of us looking a threat. We should have scored far more goals, we feel we are heading in the right direction. Performances will eventually turn in to results. And I’m convinced we will tomorrow”

As far as the Swansea City manager is concerned he is in charge of a team in the bottom three and that is very much down to him. The determination to play in a certain way is forever going to be there, and really tomorrows game is the game where Russell Martin has to prove his worth. A loss of any description could see him depart the club ( in some quarters ) can I see that happening ? I think it could be dependent on the way the swans lose the game, but everything is stacked in their favour to win. And to prove they have the character to maintain and defend a lead properly.

“ We are going to be more than fine, and I think the overall feeling is one of frustration and the players feel they should be higher up the table than they are. We have to continue with the process we have and the work that we do” added the head coach. “The fine margins of the game, football is like that, it can hurt you and it can go the other way. When you are in a moment like this more often than not it tends to go against you” Referencing a close colleague in the game who has watched all of the swans games this season Martin said “I can’t believe you’ve been so unlucky. In the majority of games you’ve been the better team or deserved something out of the game”

Those opinions are correct but in reality they haven’t turned up in positive results. Russell Martin gets another crack at three points tomorrow lunch time and we - and indeed he needs to hope this ‘unlucky streak’ ends. With seven goals in nine games that stat has to change as well, only Preston on three goals are worse off goals wise, and they have had a far better start to the season. An early win tomorrow puts the swans into thirteenth place. That won’t last long as the other championship games play out but it really does have to be a win.

Swansea City take on Hull City with a 12.30pm kick off tomorrow afternoon and it’s LIVE on SKY.
