Post match blues for Russell Martin ‘Too many looking at their own boots’
Wednesday, 9th Nov 2022 09:15 by Keith Haynes

Russell Martin bemoaned the lack of communication and organisation in the penalty area just before Birmingham City levelled at St Andrew’s last night. This sky bet championship game finished 2-2 but as we now hear quite a lot it should have been another win for Swansea City.

Talking after the game Russell Martin said. "The courage they have now to bounce back from tough moments, they've come so far in their journey. Now we have to improve that next bit, which is those moments of concentration and real desire to look around at each other. I didn't like the body language before the goal and when we conceded the corner. I didn't like it one bit. Too many looking at their own boots. That's the moment when if you have a group of twenty eight year old men, they look around at each other and scream at each other and get organised. That'll come with our guys. It'll only come when they experience the pain of moments like this. We have a three or four-week block of work after a little bit of time off after Saturday to really work on the stuff that's hurting us, and as ever we have to find solutions to problems."

Some will find that bit strange. You can understand as well where he is coming from. However, despite his fantastic performance last night isn’t that the job of twenty seven year old captain Matt Grimes ? Or maybe twenty eight year old Jay Fulton ? The switching off at set pieces continues, and looking around for reasons why is continuing after the past four games. If Martin had looked to the bench then he would see thirty three year old ‘defender’ in Kyle Naughton too.

The captain has to take responsibility here as well, he is far too quiet but does have a positive influence on the team in other ways. But at least get your team organised surely ? That’s the captains role on the field, lead by example and organise on behalf of the manager ? Sorry Mr Martin but that excuse for the equaliser last night just doesn’t fit with what was a pretty decent performance from the swans.

The first part of this bizarre season comes to an end this Saturday before the World Cup with a trip to Huddersfield Town. They secured an away win at Queens Park Rangers last night in a season that fluctuates for all. What could the result be ? 5-5 most like likely.
