Norwich City 5 v 1 Swansea City EFL Championship Saturday, 25th January 2025 Kick-off 12:30 |
Swansea City ship five goals : What an absolute disaster Saturday, 25th Jan 2025 15:21 by Liam Walters Surely now Luke Williams will be relieved of his duties at Swansea City and you can include the coaches he brought with him just over a year ago. Today the Swans were shambolic, rudderless and completely devoid of ideas. The tactics are clearly wrong and now it’s fifteen goals conceded away from home in four games. The first half in this game displayed two teams who are more than a bit down on their recent luck. The Canaries cautious, but still had a few chances through Josh Sargent to open the scoring, forever dangerous with shots flashing across Lawrence Vigouroux’s goal. That should have been a warning. At the other end the Swans had two golden chances to make an impact in this game. Bianchini getting the last touch on a cross which more hit the Norwich keeper than saving it. The ball bounced out for a corner. The second came midway through the half when a lovely cross from Ronald evaded Liam Cullen’s marker, but he completely mistimed his header, in fact he completely missed the ball. It was a very decent chance. The game when assessed over the first forty five minutes was dominated by Swansea City with slow build ups often ending up with the ball in the oppositions control. The home side were wary of the tactics employed by head coach, Luke Williams. They were very cautious and were bringing back their whole team to defend. However, it was never going to be a goal free game with the Swans playing. Once again we saw the Swans going to sleep on the cusp of half time when Sargent (below) received the ball in space on the Swansea left. In a lot of space he controlled the ball and drilled his shot at pace into the Swans net. For all the effort from the Swans, their inability to retain the football or take the right options when in a dangerous position. That’s the story of the season, the repetitive tactic of winning possession that generally goes nowhere and when a chance is made it isn’t taken. And yes, at half time the away side had the best of the possession but nothing to show for it. In fact after that late goal Norwich had two glorious chances to increase their lead. For a short period the Swans peppered the Norwich goal, Franco and Grimes both making attempts. The best effort though came from Ronald with a swerving right footed shot which just went outside of the post. Debutant Hannes Delcroix didn’t look at all out of place, at least against this level of opposition. At times he displayed his pace and quick thinking in a slightly different defensive line up with Matt Grimes slipping into the defence and indeed assisting up front. No matter though it still remained that the Swans were too quick to give away the ball or just blindly run into the opposition. There was some hope at half time but Luke Williams had again overseen a side that hasn’t scored an away goal in four games to date. Conceding goals though was now at eleven, and simply not good enough. Liam Cullen was injured just after the break in a cynical challenge but he continued on albeit extremely angry at the lack of effort from the referee. The home side were most certainly more aggressive in the second half attempting to expose the Swans defence. Harsh free kicks were also given against the Canaries as the Swans endeavoured to hit their opponent on the break. The first real chance for the Swans came on fifty three minutes when Ronald was brought down just outside the area. That came to nothing even though the ball in was straight off the training ground. The Swans did look a lot more comfortable with Delcroix in defence, his vision clearly tuned into danger. There was a similar pattern to the first half, both sides giving the ball away. When Norwich did get forwards good work came from Ben Cabango to defend his area. Ronald was still keen to get back into the game but one attempt on fifty seven minutes saw him go down clutching his shoulder. On fifty nine minutes Vigouroux for some reason lost control of the ball and passed the ball out for a corner. The Swans keeper making his regular mistake a game leaving the away fans with their hearts in their mouths. On sixty one minutes after some interplay between Peart-Harris and Josh Key saw a very dangerous cross come in from the right. Putting to the back of his mind his previous heading error Cullen with a diving header made it 1-1. The Swans first away goal of the year. But of course that isn’t the whole story. From the kick off Norwich pressed, the Swans defence were ball watching and that man Sargent again fired in another shot that beat Vigouroux, and yes it was 2-1. Calamitous for a side to switch off so quickly after scoring. You would have thought by now the technical side of today’s game plan would have included stay awake when in danger. That was Sargent’s second goal. He was immediately subbed off to preserve him for the next game. They were not happy to allow him to aggravate his injury as he had just come back from a long spell out. Whatever is happening in the minds of these Swans players it isn’t right. From the kick off they again gave the ball away, but did slowly get back into the game. The basics of passing the ball to someone you came to the game on the coach with was completely lost though. They were second best but did press bringing on Sam Parker for Peart-Harris. Sam, a young player at just eighteen obviously not being graded as per Kyrell Wilson has who joined Yeovil yesterday. Bianchini was also taken off for Vipotnik. These changes seemed to inspire the Swans, taking more responsibility and attempting to get forwards in amongst more misplaced passes. Both sides were now at it looking for that crucial goal. A corner on seventy four minutes was cleared off the line by Cabango, from there another dangerous cross shot eased its way past Swansea’s far post. Despite all that Josh Key decided to again, and we mean again this season to give the ball away. Dobbin who had the ball at his feet as a result burst forwards, took aim and fired home the third goal of the game for the Canaries. Again the technical side of the game lost on these Swans players, now we had thirteen goals conceded in four away games. In amongst all that Eom came on for Liam Cullen. On eighty three minutes Norwich scored again. Delcroix did look to be fouled but on reflection he was just outmuscled by Norwich goalscorer, Crnac. Not to be outdone another ball over the top was eventually finished off by Marcondes. That was five. Despite substitutions nothing was working, and Luke Williams was now surely in an untenable position as Swans head coach. There is no way this team can carry on under his guidance, the evidence of three goals in thirteen minutes in this half testament to that. There can be no excuses and there most certainly there can’t be any more post match interviews from Luke Williams. Over a year the players haven’t improved and in numerous cases they have gone backwards. Ronald and Key are prime examples. Those three hundred hardy Swans fans who made this journey, some will take around twelve hours for this round trip they deserve medals and their money back. The only thing Luke Williams deserves is the sack. He is way out of his depth, and as we have said for a while he has no place at Swansea City as a head coach.
