Swans to visit Premier League failures this weekend
Friday, 6th Dec 2024 13:14 by Liam Walters & Keith Haynes

Swansea City travel to Luton Town for a fixture tomorrow at Kenilworth Road (3pm) to face what looks like a Luton Town side on the slide. For some that won’t be a bad thing.

Luton haven’t met their relegation back to the championship well, the departure of Paul Watson’s structure behind the scenes not being continued upon promotion to the Premier League. Especially when he joined Swansea City, and the bigoted responses to our reporting of that appointment would only mean we could only wish them a perilous journey. With attitudes like they have as a fanbase to see them where they are today is very satisfying. That’s football folks, say it as you see it, and don’t hide behind anything. We are of course not speaking out against every Luton fan, that really is bigoted, we leave that for others elsewhere.

So, the chances of Luton winning ? That isn’t a long shot, they have won five fixtures from eighteen this season. The issue is the thirty three goals they have conceded which gives them a minus thirteen goal difference. They do have some respectable possession stats, but that in a lot of cases doesn’t reflect a successful team. A strong area in their game is set pieces this season, over thirty five percent of their goals coming from those types of situations.

Only five points separate the teams in the Championship table. The Swans in what is a disappointing thirteenth and Luton in nineteenth. We say disappointing as so many games should have gone the other way this campaign. Saturday against Portsmouth a prime example of the Swans switching off and losing possession - plus of course countless chances not being converted. The persistence in playing certain players annoyingly frustrating with better choices elsewhere. That really has to change.

The Hatters Scottish striker Jacob Brown who has been at the club since the summer last year is confident this game will see the start of better times for his club. “As a player you’ve got to go through tough times. You’re never going to be winning every week, you have to be pushing through these times and come back stronger, so that’s what we’ve got to do. It is literally just the basics. I thought our shape at times was really good. To come away from home and score two goals is a positive (Norwich last time out) but it’s not going to be enough when we’re gifting easy goals away. It’s been like that for a couple of games now. We have been too easy to play against, that’s not us, it shouldn’t be us anyway. I don’t know how many goals it is in the last three away games, it’s clearly something that we need to be better at. We need to be more resilient, stop gifting silly goals, I know we say it a lot, but we just have to work on improving that now. When we play well and do well as a team it’s because we’re hard working, resilient and teams find it hard to break us down, but we haven’t been that recently. It’s something we are working on and have to work on, but we have to start doing it in the games when it matters.”

That may well be so but after tomorrow the Hatters have another home game on Tuesday night against Stoke City. Two winnable games coming up then ? If their losing trend continues manager Rob Edwards will be looking over his shoulder.
