Swansea City : Tyrese is ready to choose his favoured club, but there are warning signs
Saturday, 3rd Aug 2024 08:25 by Liam Walters

Swansea City have spoken with Tyrese Campbell and his agent over a move to Swansea City. Talks ended yesterday with the player now mulling over offers he has received this week. A personal friend of Campbell is Swansea player Josh Tymon who enjoyed an excellent season last campaign.

Despite the BBC stating earlier today that the Swans have had a slow summer, we would describe it more of a carefully planned and reactive recruitment campaign. Reactive being based on the signing of Žan Vipotnik, which was confirmed yesterday after international clearance. This has been a more comfortable transfer window which is seemingly far better planned with well researched targets coming into the club.

Tyrese Campbell has spoken to numerous clubs and despite news that Glasgow Rangers, as an example, are interested they haven’t progressed matters as much as the Swans have this week. There will be sticking points, and the first one will be getting Campbell in tune with the fact his salary has to be within a certain structure if he signs for the Swans. Rumoured to be collecting around £6,500 a week at Stoke, we believe that is very much the ball park figure, with incentives and bonuses the Swans will feel comfortable with. (Sources)

We wouldn’t be surprised if he is offered less.

The other area Tyrese faces is his recent injury issue last season, however conversely he can point to a good end to last season at Stoke City. He scored two goals from three decent end of season performances. That didn’t prove enough to the Potters to offer a new contract, hence his free agent status this weekend.

Stoke fans on hearing Tyrese was leaving Stoke were split in their feelings, but the majority complained about his work rate, and a few his attitude.

Quotes such as, ‘In Tyes case, promised so much but rarely delivered it. A good player in there but when he feels like it’ and ‘ He had his best scoring spell when playing alongside Steven Fletcher, good luck to him in the future. You can guarantee he'll score a shed load wherever he ends up’ are reflective of many. It’s interesting that the signing of Žan, a mobile striker who is good in the air is capable of more than fulfilling a link with Campbell. Campbell needs to work alongside a striker as opposed to be being the man relied upon to create and score goals. Another remarked, ‘ Goal record of 1 every 4.5 games tells you he’ll not be missed. Shame as he has the game to score 20 goals a season but he just doesn’t seem to want it enough’

That seems to be the feeling of Stoke City followers, he hasn’t got the work rate or desire in him to capitalise on his quality. That’s a red flag at his age (24) and he should reflect a player who has learned from being at a good club for many years. He has played six Championship seasons since signing on in Staffordshire, returning 32 goals in 142 games. However, he only started 87 times for Stoke. Tyrese is capable of playing out wide, and has had games as a ‘number 10’ but his effort has seen him released under little fanfare this summer.

We have been told that his signing, if it happens, would see a player who really needs to up his work rate and contribution in games. With Eom on the left and Ronald on the right, with numerous other options of course, he could prove to be a quality signing for whoever he favours over the coming days. Not so much a gamble on what he can produce, that’s evident, but he needs to put in more effort. The burning question is can he be the team player that Swans head coach, Luke Williams wants ? Signing a player who lacks the discipline to develop is most certainly not what the club needs. This is a season that we all hope will reveal players who are up to the mark and ready to go.

Is Tyrese one of those players ?

Spotting faces in the crowd may well be a good game to play today, especially as if certain targets are openly there then the possibility of them signing is drastically increased. The Swans kick off at 3pm today against Rio Ave at the Swansea.com in their final game of pre season.
