Goalkeeper Lewis Webb returns from Aberystwyth Town
Thursday, 26th Jan 2023 07:42 by Keith Haynes

After his six month loan spell in the Cymru Premier League with Aberystwyth Town Twenty one year old Lewis Webb is back at Swansea City, his parent club. The statistics from his loan spell don’t make excellent reading despite turning out for the black and greens in fifteen games this season. The stats reflect his last game was at the end of December, a 6-1 loss to Newtown at Latham Park.

After the Newtown defeat Aberystwyth signed Matt Turner four days later on loan from Cardiff City, and that signalled the end of Lewis’s appearances for Aberystwyth. Unfortunately Lewis experienced only four wins on the west Wales coast from fifteen games letting in thirty seven goals. He was injured and missed the 11-0 drubbing at The New Saints returning after the World Cup break. Unfortunately his last four games of December upon returning were all defeats conceding thirteen goals.

With Swansea City looking for a back up keeper it has to be said at this stage playing Lewis would be considered a gamble by some. He has experienced some bench time with the first team, and it was Steve Cooper who endorsed his first precessional deal in 2019. That concludes in the summer of 2024 with a one year option. His previous experience was with Merthyr Town. During his time there he received Wales recognition as he has since signing for the Swans.

However, Lewis is a grafter in training and is recognised for his professionalism at all the clubs that he has played for. At Shelbourne last year where he impressed immensely they have nothing but praise for his hard work. On leaving Ireland in the summer of 2022 Shelbourne Head Coach Damien Duff ( ex Chelsea & Newcastle United ) said: “I would like to thank Lewis for the last five months. He is a top professional with big potential and I have no doubt he will go on to have a very successful career. Myself, the staff and the players would like to wish him all the very best for the future.”

From there Lewis signed for Aberystwyth Town.

The question will be asked is Lewis Webb now up to the demands of the championship should Andy Fisher receive an injury in the near future ? The Swans are contemplating a loan signing but we understand they can leave it until the situation becomes more urgent if finances are an issue. There should be some news today or tomorrow on that. A keeper can be added as an emergency loan out of the transfer window. For us we do believe that a more experienced keeper is needed either to step in to Steven Benda’s boots or perform a back up role to Andy Fisher.
