Michael Obafemi ! What really is his problem ?
Tuesday, 13th Sep 2022 09:00 by @Cornish67David

If the words of Swansea City manager Russell Martin are to be compared with his press conferences of old then it seems likely Michael Obafemi will miss tonights game against Sheffield United. It’s quite clear the deadline day dealings with Burnley were not to his liking, and he wanted to leave Swansea City, and now his reaction is as we have seen before.

Personally I’m pretty annoyed with Obafemi, and not for the first time.

We have seen it all before from him, and if he has anyone to blame he had better start with himself. We have already reported the reasons why clubs will offer lower fees for players who have a history of disciplinary issues, and Obafemi has just that. Due diligence by Burnley on his character and disciplinary history of course will influence the amount of money on the table. Clubs don’t buy trouble for top dollar. And you wouldn’t buy a broken car for top dollar either.

It happened last season and Obafemi found himself out of favour, and now we see it again, it simply isn’t good enough and there’s no excuse in the world for it. On the surface that is. He has already been outed again by Russell Martin for not being in the appropriate frame of mind to be selected for the win against QPR. And now he says this - "Michael will be back in the squad as soon as he’s ready to be back. That’s where we’re at. He had a turbulent few days in the transfer window. After that it’s down to him to show us that he’s in right place to contribute to the team. As soon as he is, he’ll be back in and ready to go. He’s been fine. There’s a group of players who won against QPR and did really well. Michael has to compete with those guys and give us a decision to make for the squad ahead of tomorrow.bI don’t think he’s unhappy to still be here. He was told the move was a lot closer than it actually was at one point” When Russell Martin says ‘I don’t think he’s unhappy to be here” that should tell everyone where Obafemi is at.

He’s had his chances and he’s totally ungrateful, that’s the point here.

Martin went on. "When you think something’s there that’s beneficial in ways outside of football, then there’s going to be some disappointment of course if you wanted that to happen. But he’s not unhappy to be here still. He understands how important the club has been for his own development and how patient everyone involved here has been." I’ve got my doubts there, if he does actually believe that he would have been pulling on a swans shirt against QPR. And don’t get me going on Jamie Paterson, rewarded for his poor behaviour during January by being given a new contract, and yes ‘He was fined’ by the club in January but it was reverted two days later, anyone got a few quid they would like to put on that ?

Irrespective of personal beliefs on the truth or otherwise this Obafemi situation was always going to happen. Russell Martin trains and educates his players in a certain way, it is meant to develop them, but of course if their lack of awareness provokes the same old reactions, then getting dropped is always something Michael will experience. No matter where he plays. And for me the club should have cashed in on him two weeks ago, as they should have Jamie Paterson. But that’s a personal belief not a website one.

I suppose it’s too easy enough to take a swipe at Michael, but I’m also intolerant of people who behave so selfishly they can’t go to work ( and I will use that term loosely in football ) or function because they have failed to listen to their mentors and respect the young people who foolishly idolise them. Hopefully they will see through this thin veil sooner rather than later. They say football supporters are fickle, and not surprisingly there’s a reason for that. It’s an enclosed world which Russell Martin made quite clear when he said “Michael was told a move was closer than it was” This transfer window gave me a newly founded respect for Joel Piroe as well. And already Martin has qualified that by comparing the two ( Obafemi and Piroe ) one is left out of the team, the other used as a comparison on how to learn, develop and deal with any situation. and he has.

That’s why Joel Piroe will start tonight, and Michael Obafemi won’t. Simple as that.

The manager should have know what did when he was at Southampton and now because his transfer did not go through he is having a quip let him rot in the reserves we have much better players young players coming through the academy it is a pity RM did not let him go a born trouble maker to the rest of the squad.
