Lee Trundle scores for Swansea City as the referee adds on an extra four minutes of injury time
Thursday, 28th Oct 2021 11:43 by Gruff Stephens

A look back now to one of the most dramatic games between Swansea City and Peterborough United in recent times. This game ended 2-2 after a second half that was as exciting as it was controversial. We are going back to 2009.

Aaron Mclean's injury-time strike saved Peterborough after Swansea substitute Lee Trundle netted two late goals. The visitors dominated the first half but went behind when Chris Whelpdale profited from defensive confusion after Exodus Geohaghon's long throw.
Trundle was introduced on 70 minutes and made an impact with with a low shot past Joe Lewis before shrugging off his marker for an injury-time second. But in the fourth minute of injury time Mclean scrambled in from close range.

Captain George Boyd provided the assistance, skipping away down the left and driving in a low cross which was missed by two defenders to allow Mclean to steer home at the far post. Despite the late relief, Peterborough remain rooted to the bottom of the Championship with new manager Mark Cooper still seeking his first win. Peterborough manager Mark Cooper said "We had been behind at half-time in our two previous games and were anxious to make sure that didn't happen again. "A team with Swansea's footballing ability can cut you to pieces and we couldn't afford to let that happen. "In the second half we were the better team. We got ourselves 1-0 up, should have gone 2-0 and could have been 3-0. You always think the game has gone when you fall behind that late, but the lads never know when they are beaten, kept going and earned a point."

Swansea manager Paulo Sousa responded,"There was only one team with the mentality to win the game, we produced all the football and did everything we could to get the three points. "I do not feel we deserved to be behind anyway. Anything can happen at a throw-in like the one for their first goal and in my opinion there was a foul on Gorka Pintado from behind. "It is not a fair goal but my team showed a good reaction to come back and score two goals to get ourselves ahead. "But we have to show more maturity after making such a big effort. It is very disappointing to leave with only one point."

Lee Trundle was the star man for the swans on the day

Fan Comment on the day : It was an interesting day, from the off two of the Peterborough stewards were out for a fight, and got one as the fans left the ground. Having goaded them for most of the game the stewards got exactly what they wanted and it’s not often this should be said, however in this case they totally deserved the response they got. They had spoilt the game for many of the law abiding swans fans there, and got their comeuppance for their behaviour which was the most unprofessional I have seen at a football match in thirty years.
