Coventry City 1 Swansea City 1 : As it happened, Video & Photos, Cooper’s reaction.
Tuesday, 20th Oct 2020 17:32

Swansea City drew 1-1 with Coventry away tonight in a game that really did frustrate, and the lack of defensive awareness is a real concern. The majority of the sky blues chances came from lapses in concentration in the swans defence when challenging loose balls, and on another night this was three points for Coventry. Check out our Matchday ticker as it happened with images.

Extended highlights of last nights game

Steve Cooper post match.

“I was not overly pleased with the first-half performance. I felt we were second best with our work-rate and intensity and doing the non-negotiables of the game,” said the head coach.

“Truth be told I was happy it was 1-1 at half-time, with Andre getting us back in the game in the way he did. It was a little bit of a blessing, as when you’re not quite on our game you have to ensure you stay in the game.

“We made a tactical change, I felt we needed an extra body in midfield and there wasn’t as much space as we wanted or planned for Andre in the number 10 position.

“I felt it worked for 25 minutes, we had the momentum but for some reason we gave that up and - before you know it - we are too deep. We are dealing with shots and crosses in our box.

“So, I’m not overly happy with the performance, but I’m happy we stayed in the game and that we did not get beat, as a performance like that means you have to show other sides of your game.

“But the way the game went, I’m not too disappointed with a point.”

Matchday Ticker

We are off at St Andrews.

10 mins : Slow start from the swans, no chances for either side. Scrappy. Swans passing game being well managed by Coventry. Ayew takes a ball in the musher, time out.

15 mins : Coventry getting tight on Swansea city’s passing game giving away free kicks. First header on goal from a Swansea set piece. No problem for Coventry keeper.

18 Mins : Shot from outside the box, 1-0 Coventry. Poor closing down yet again like Huddersfield Saturday. Was Woodman at fault there ?

Coventry take the lead

25 mins : Swansea are lack lustre, no energy, hopeful balls forward, not what we have come to expect. All at sea when the sky blues utilise the left flanks.

29 mins : Roberts fre kick cleared easily by Coventry.

32 mins. : Corner Swansea, cleared, another corner, easily cleared again. Swans build again, but it’s hard going.

35 mins : Lowe hits a cross over the bar, so poor from the swans tonight so far. Gyökeres crosses, very poor. He isn’t even noticeable tonight.

39 mins : misplaced passes continue, 57% possession for the swans but absolutely nothing to show for their efforts. Free kick for the swans after a foul on Bidwell. Roberts free kick punched away by the Coventry keeper.

It continues to be a hard watch for swans fans.

41 mins : Lovely cross by Bidwell, firm finish by Ayew, first time the swans go positive they score, clue there boys.

Ayew scores for the swans tonight

One moment of absolute quality and the swans deliver, get in to half time and let Cooper sort it out, he needs to. This is not the swans he or any of us wants.

Half Time, Keith Stroud blows his whistle.

The totally inconspicuous Gyökeres is subbed for Fulton.

Coventry 1 Swansea 1

45 mins : underway second half.

47 mins : Coventry off to a lively start, shot on target, Woodman saves it easily.

50 mins : It seems the swans are continuing the thread of the first half, very off the pace, misplaced passes.

57 mins : free kick Swansea on the left, oh dear, very deep, cleared.

60 mins : Was that a penalty, Keith Stroud waves away what looks like a clear penalty for the swans. Swans right on top now. Bidwell busy.

63 mins : Looks like a decent decision by the ref, Lowe went down easy.

Coventry injury, time now for the swans to show their quality, it’s been lacking all night.

64 mins : Cullen on for Lowe.

68;mins : Very quiet spell, Swansea don’t seem to realise this is the time to push on and get the points.

71 mins : Swans continue to press but passes are short and slow, however Marc Guehi has a snap shot from thirty yards just over the bar. Another chance as the cross comes in from Bidwell but Smith hits it well wide.

74 mins : Cullen’s movement definitely making a difference. Swans continue to press and looking the more likely to score. Swans now dominating midfield.

76 mins : Coventry resorting to hoofing clearances, 15 to go the swans should stamp their authority on this game now.

78 mins : Coventry score but it’s ruled out, but it’s hard to see why. Low shot that powered by Woodman, what was that for ? Apparently offside, odd.

81 mins : Coventry have found their feet and are pressing for the winner, swans defence looking slow when coming out to block loose balls, this is becoming a bit annoying. So slow.

84 mins : Decent free kick from Coventry from a good 35 yards beats Woodman, but slightly wide. Swansea beginning to switch off and doze, this is frustrating but there’s still time for a winner, for either side.

87 mins : Coventry pressing, once again poor and slow pressing by the swans defence in the box allowing a shot to come in, Roberts off the line, another cross and Coventry miss in front of goal. Swans defence is all at sea. It’s really all about being extremely sleepy, unbelievable poor by Swansea.

94 mins : Swans free kick on the left, could it be ? No, Matt Grimes hits it too deep.

LATEST MANAGER VIEWS

Steve Cooper: “I’ve watched Coventry a lot over the international break, they play with a good style and formation.

“They have shown they are more than able to compete at this level, and they can cause damage to sides with how they play.

“But, after defeat, whoever we play next, it is about us getting back to being us.

“Large parts of the performance against Huddersfield were good. But you want to perform well, create and take chances and keep the ball out of your net. We did not do that well enough on the weekend.

“We look at ourselves and want to make sure we get back on a winning run.”

Mark Robins: “I think we are clearly a team that’s been promoted from League One that’s trying to find our feet and taking a bit too long to do that during games.

“But we have got to remember who we are playing against and the level we have come in to is a huge step up.

“I just want us to go and show the real face of the team because they are good.”
