Ronald Koeman Early Favourite For Saints Job Tuesday, 27th May 2014 21:16 Feyenoord coach Ronald Koeman is the bookies favourite to replace Mauricio Pochettino at St Mary's
If Saints are looking for a high profile coach to placate those members of the supporter base that are going into meltdown tonight then they could do far worse than appoint bookies favourite Ronald Koeman.
The Dutchman is leading the first odds tables compiled by the bookies, whether they have an insider knowledge or not is unclear, but Koeman is on offer at 5/1 with some offering as low as 4/1.
Koeman has coached at some of the biggest clubs in Europe including the big 3 in Holland of Ajax, Feynoord & PSV, although he has had mixed fortunes at all of them he has still got 3 Dutch Eridivisie titles to his name with two at Ajax and one at PSV.
He has been at Feyenoord for three years although he has failed to add any silverwear to their illustrious history, he could therefore be ripe for a crack at the Premier league after a coaching career that as head honcho has so far spanned 14 years.
His pedigree would perhaps placate Saints supporters wanting someone with not only experience but a reputation in football as well, given the situation at St Mary's at present the board might go for the likes of Koeman rather than going for an unknown like Yakin which would lead to accusations of cost cutting, also Koeman would be a bigger name to help hang on to the star names and could be construed as indication that Katharina Liebherr and her board mean business.

Koeman and Yakim have interesting track records, what really matters is whether they share the vision of the Board. It would be nice to think that we could appoint somebody who could move the team forward and be happy to stay around long enough to bring more of the young homegrown players through into the first team. But any ambitious manager (and would we want a manager who wasn't) is likely to see Saints as a stepping stone to one of the biggest clubs, as with MoPo. Personally I see it as no bad thing for Saints to be seen as a club where players, managers and coaches can advance their careers. People don't hang around any more like they did in the days of Ted Bates and Lawrie Mac.

I agree, Pochettino did not develop any of our talent they were there when he arrived. We can thank him for signing Wanyama but Osvaldo was an expensive waste of space and he over Poked Jack Cprk for far too long. Overall glad to see the back of him. He won't last long at Spurs.

Koeman won't be shy in throwing his hat in the ring, via his agent, having done so for the Swansea job earlier a few months ago. The Dutch model is a good fit for us and he is certainly a "name" to generate interest. Might be a bit abrasive/forthright in his approach, and his managerial record is mixed though there may be mitigating circumstances. Hey, what do I know. Just a Saints fan and I'll need to have faith in the board to due diligence, etc. knowing that there are no guarantees of success

IanRC - a lot of Saints players (Clyne, Shaw, Lallana etc.) have credited Poch for pushing their games onto the next level, so to say he 'did not develop any of our talent' is quite misinformed!

Im not surprised by MoPo's exit, but all the irrate comments aimed at the board and personally at MoPo seem to assume that the board actually wanted to keep him but failed to do so as Mopo wanted to leave for a 'bigger' club, I'm not so sure thats the case. Its not unusual for corporate business's to manage all members of a managment team out if they are trying to create regime change, why do we assume its different with a football club? MoPo was NC's man, its not unthinkable that the new board would want to get rid of him and bring in their own guy to ensure stablity, unity and draw a line under the previous administration of the club. In terms of what the board has/hasnt done - we have resigned all our young talent on long term contracts but didnt didnt do the same to the manager prior to the end of season, which lets face it, if he'd featured in your long term plans you would have. For the record I was a massive NC and MoPo fan and would point to the progress made on and off the field under their leadership as the reason why (IanRC you're talking nonsense). However MoPo isnt the only talented manager available so if this now allows for the board to bring in their own guy and he does a great job plus we have harmony at the top of the club then that can only bode well. Lets be honest we knew sweet FA about MoPo before he arrived and we all morned the loss of NA............we'll learn to love whoever manages this club whether it Koeman, Yakin or somebody else we know very little about.

The talent was developed over years not 18 months. I'm sure they would say the same about Pardew and Atkins. We'll never know how much influence MP had over signings. His test will come now: how does he handle the prima donnas at Spurs? He walked into (and out on) a group of good young players who had developed amongst themselves a camaraderie while climbing up out of the lower leagues at Saints. Not so at Spurs. Anyway, players or managers, it always comes down to money-and you can't really blame them for making as much as they can while they can-teams will sell or fire them at the drop of a hat if it's to the team's advantage.

I agree BoondockSaint...... I cant imagine Adebayor enjoying the conditioning training required to play a pressing style. Also whilst we had loads of possession I wouldnt call MoPos style ovely attacking, after all he was a pretty pragmatic defender as a player, so it will be intresting to see if the Spurs fans warm to him, if they dont then we all know Levis track record. Most of the spurs fans I know are pretty underwhelmed by him joining.

I quite fancy Steve Maclaren, he may have had some bad press, but his record is good. You don't get chosen for the poison chalice of England Manager without a good pedigree. His recent record in Holland and with Derby is excellent. He's English and has a record for working well with youngsters. Similar story with David Moyes, had a tough job at UTD, but did wonders with Everton. He's been accused of not matching our attacking style, and what is that? To pass slickly back and forward in front of the opposition goal, then end up passing it back to our keeper. Our goal scoring record at the end of the season was woeful, thank god for defenders, ours and theirs! Whoever comes in, will inherit a ready made squad, raring to get started and show how good they are. I also have a feeling that the loss of Lallana may actually be a good thing as Ramirez may take the opportunity to shine, we all know he has the ability, maybe this is his moment? Cork will blossom, thank god Davis is under the radar it's vital we keep him, make him captain! Who knows maybe the new guy may, just be the man to get the best out of Osvaldo? Stranger things have happened!

Seems we have to acknowledge the glass ceiling above us where unless we spend a lot we wont get any higher in the league. Ambitious players and managers want to perform at the highest level. That wont ever change unless the board want to gamble big time and why would they want to do that with what is a decent business model? So I guess we will continue be a stepping stone . But so what - that's always been the case and If we continue to roll out and play good kids and perform as we have this year who is going to complain? Think McClaren or Moyes would be good shout

There are some good managers available at the moment. Let's hope the board choose wisely. I wish it was someone other than Reed advising the non football experienced board. There are some very good Scottish managers available and someone like Laudrup. It has to be someone the players know and respect as our team spirit and youthful outlook are our way forward. No knee jerk reaction please, think it through. This too important to get wrong.

I cant see the board going taking any great risks here. Safe option Moyes. Thought I personally think it would be the wrong one. Roberto Martinez may have shown how modest Moyes achievement with Everton really was.

there is a ceiling above saints. massive investment would be needed to realise the MP/ NC vision well beyond what KL is prepared to commit. Good luck to MP and to Lallana, Shaw and Spider if they decide to take advantage of the sort of profile that comes along maybe once in a career. they've earnt their chance at a tilt at the champions league. for Saints i hope we get a manager that will continue to develop and buy young promising talent. supporting saints for over 50 years at least gives a bit of perspective. club bigger than any manager or player.
