The English handicapper lets Skelton take the absolute piss cos he's the only English trainer with the ability and the guts to stick it up to the Irish, it's actually really hurting Gordon Elliot cos his horses are now handicapped on what he's done in the past rather than the horses ability, yet they let Skelton mug everyone off with Langer Dan twice.

The biggest cheer of the day on his second win was the tannoy announcement "Would Mr D Skelton please make his way to the stewards room"

Also the Skeltons seem to have the handicapper on strings so 51/1 for the each way double of Katiera and Be Aware, they pulled off the same double in 2024 with Langer Dan (the biggest cheat in history lol) and Unexpected Party

Day 2 looks really tricky - save your funds to have a big crack at the big fav treble on Thursday

13:20 Skylight Hustle, I'll Sort That

There has been a huge overreaction to the Supreme result where mediocre English horses have become massively overated. I am very against the fav. With this race being full, and 4 place, there looks like bundles of value. I backed Zeus Power at 100/1 ante post but he looks mighty short now. Skylight Hustle is a horse that I've enjoyed all season, but I can not fathom why I'll Sort That is the price he is - bigger than Sortudo who he battered at Naas. Front runner, huge staying engine, he's massively my idea of the winner and 4 places at the prices give you profit making insurance

14:00 Western Fold, Predator's Gold

The top of the market looks rank - Final Demand is a bottle job, Romeo Coolio has been running at 2m all season, Wendigo's form has no substance. Elliot's horses have been running rank, but I like the profile of Western Fold with his extensive experience that counts for a lot here, and he gets his favoured ground.

Then at a big price, I can't get away from Predator's Gold. Whilst not the highest class, he is tough as nails, Danny Mullins got an upset on Kargese yesterday, and his form looks brilliant. Each way with a shot to upset EDIT: And he's a non runner

14:40 Kopek du Mee 10/1 ew

I have been betting on Cheltenham for 13 years. I have never backed the winner of this race. So I only have one angle in here. Mullins runners at the festival making either their seasonal debut or having had one run all season have an insane strike rate, especially in the handicaps (Kargese and Jimmy du Seiul last year, Lossiemouth in the mares, Poinross in the Triumph). Sony Bill also fits the bill here, but he looks like he might just not be good enough

15:20 Final Orders 17/2 ew, Favori du Champadou for a double

Final Orders as this race rewards specialists and the winner of the December X Country race here have an incredible record. FDC has to be respected but is too short

16:00 Majborough for a double Captain Guinness ew

Majborough should win, but he has a habit of throwing in a couple of howlers, so we need to take him on. Captain Guinness is old now, but 2m chasing is a specialism. His record in this race is 3213 so at 50/1 we can chance the each way knowing he can pick up the pieces here

16:40 Vanderpoel 8/1 ew Break My Soul 16/1 ew

Have been following Vanderpoel all season, and love an improving English horse for this race. From across the sea Break My Soul has some incredible back form that belies their price

17:20 Love Sign D'Anou 5/1, The Wager 50/1 ew

Sometimes it's obvious - the highest rated horse in the bumper has won 7/12 runnings, so hard to dispute the fav. However, few ride bumpers better than Jody Townend, so 50/1 each way for The Wager feels like a no brainer to me

Multiples
I'd do the Majborough/FDC double around 5/1

Skylight Hustle/Western fold ew double 155/1

Lucky 15 - I'll Sort That, Kopek du Mee, Vanderpoel, Love Sign D'Anou - 9,719/1

I thought Kopek was cruising to victory, that peck on landing killed his momentum. Experience told though, and god what a jockey Danny Mullins is

Jonnywho....curse his bloody name! He somehow contrived to get beat in the Kim Muir last year when I needed him as the last leg for 4k. I watched the replay so many times....at the final fence I still think "HOW did he lose this"

I have never seen a day on the markets like it. A lot of chat that AI led betting syndicates moving prices - there were four favourites for the NH Chase. Saratoga placed im the quintessential cheaters hurdle trial for the Fred Winter and was 5/1, drifted off to a mad price despite being JP own, hoses in. Mad stuff

What we learned for tomorrow:

The moving of the final hurdle has made the finish super tight and you simply have to be backing runners up with the pace, hold up horses have been left for dust

The markets have enormously overreacted to the British 1234 in the Supreme. If we looked at the big Irish runners, trends say El Cairos and Mighty Park had no chance based on experience, and Talk the Talk's owners were keen on the Turners tomorrow - in fact most of his form is with that cohort. Bossman Jack now being shorter than Skylight Hustle cos he's English is madness to me

As a trends guy, I'd be dead against.

Nicholls has a terrible record in this race - he got Denman beat in it ffs

Challow Hurdle winner has a dreadful record in it - New Lion last year only horse to ever do the double.

But English hurdle form looks ok based on today?

Edit to say - never let anyone talk you out of what your eyes have seen

My daily write up

Prices were correct this morning

Despite me ending up tipping mostly favs, it looks like one of the most competitive Cheltenhams ever, slow and steady will win this race

13:20 - Old Park Star 5/2 win, Talk the Talk 5/1 each way if you're a scumbag

Sometimes the answer is staring you in the face. When Henderson has a weapon in this race, it does the business. Think he's a potential superstar. Also like Talk the Talk but his run style (being produced late) may struggle with the pace Sober Glory is likely to set

14:00 - Kopek Des Bordes 6/4 win

Only 2 horses have won the arkle off 1 run, but he is simply better than all these. 5 year olds have a terrible record and I think Lulamba is a stayer not a 2 miler, Kargese a danger but she had a tough race on a swamp at the Dublin Racing Festival. Sometimes, the answer is oh I already said that

14:40 Ammes 8/1 ew

Feels weird tipping anything here - over the last ten years if you had just put £1 on every horse over 25/1 you'd be £64 up. Winston Junior hits trends but is very very short. I personally would side with Ammes. He finished a narrow 2nd to Minella Study who is 5/1 for the Triumph so 8/1 here feels strong.

But mostly pick a yoke at a big price with an A in their name and you'll outperform my record in the race lol

15:20 - Imperial Saint 25/1, Konfusion 20/1 both e/w

A very wise man has tipped Hyland to me, but I dislike how the trainer wanted to go to another race, the owners forced them to run here. I also like Resplendent Grey (winners of the Charlie Park are 1391913 in this race) but I think he might be quite exposed. This is a very trends driven race and both of these hit every single one, they simply must be played. Konfusion came out strongest in my modelling

16:00 - Lossiemouth 2/1 win, Golden Ace 12/1 ew

I personally wasn't sure that Lossiemouth has the cruising speed to go at 2m championship pace, but the cheek pieces makes me reconsider. Willie Mullins strike rate with 1st time cheek pieces is 65%, and backed blind £1 would put you £17 up. Undefeated at Cheltenham too.

Golden Ace is a great price for a place as BDA has bottled it at Cheltenham twice, and The New Lion is shit, plus she can win if it falls apart as she did last year.

16:40 - Madara, Downmexicoway 8/1 each way

Everyone in the world is backing Madara like we're about to watch the replay, but I personally love the profile of Downmexicoway, Henry has a great record in this race, looks every inch the winner to me

17:20 - Backmeorsackme 9/2 win, Holokea 33/1 ew

Not a race I love (loads of average horses trotting round a ludicrous distance) but favs have a good record here, as does Emmet Mullins who really knows how to lay one out for this.

Holokea may not be good enough, but he has comparable form against this field, and unlike many of them has run well at Cheltenham before which is a massive plus

Day One Mug Treble: Old Park Star/Kopek des Bordes/Lossiemout 25/1

Double: Downmexicoway/Backmeorsackme 51/1

My late father told me you should never leave before the end. Drilled into me.

I was lobbying us to go to the pub from the 65th minute having missed the first ten minutes of the second half. I wasn't even drinking, I just could not be bothered to go back and watch.

Afterwards I felt great sadness that I hadn't won the day and we bothered to watch the rest of that rigmarole when I could've been doing literally anything else with my time

I'm a long term "Borthwick is a fraud" advocate, but it looked like he'd got them motoring; big wins, 12 game winning streak.

What's concerning for England is the things that went wrong were all the things that went wrong at the start of his tenure; low work rate, bad discipline, and his defensive system seems to implode completely if it's not working.

The discipline thing in particular was jarring. I've never seen a team get on the wrong side of *two* referees before. When the new man came on they should've thought of it as a reset, instead they were all gobbing off at him from the start. To concede a 10m dissent penalty in a test match in 2026 is jaw dropping

Obvs delighted to beat England, but my god England were terrible. Actually might be the worst England performance I've ever seen.

They were so lazy. Arundell stole a cap jogging around. Compare and contrast Baloucoune and McCloskey running 40m to make try saving tackles to every time Ireland broke the line being about to run almost 60m uninterrupted.

Ireland scored a try off a kick return play in Dublin last year. We ran the *exact* same play twice on Saturday and....scored twice from it. A professional team shouldn't have that happening to them.

Ireland won pretty much entirely through work rate

Another sport but Nick Mullins on ITV rugby is absolutely intolerable. His tone is always a total mismatch for the flow of the game and just chats incessant drivel. I've started watching on mute

Back when we were in the Prem, I was at Arsenal away on my lonesome. During the pre match handshake, the guy next to me shouted "BUILD A TEAM, DON'T BUY A TEAM RANGERS"

Sage advice, but not totally sure what they could do about it at that moment in time.

So I often get a hoot out of thinking of the players overhearing him, looking at each other and going "damn, he's right. Sorry Arsenal, game's off. We gotta go build a team"

Bikes in London
at 11:08 10 Feb 2026

First day of the year cycling into work, and was hilariously almost run over by my neighbour parking their car on the pavement as I wheeled my bike out of my front gate in a real "you couldn't make it up" moment.

Happy to report that all of London's road users be it four wheels, two wheels or legs, remain absolute psychopaths

This is a great read about why the sands have shifted so quickly from under Ireland, and in general what the game has become about

https://www.threeredkings.com/

Tl:Dr - ruck based phase play, the backbone of Irelands game since 2017, has dramatically become very ineffective with the new kick contest laws

Sorry, I'm hoping this doesn't come across as personal, because the written word on a forum can sound intense, I just love chatting rugby and don't want to make it sound like I'm going in hard on you!

Scotland also went to Fiji and Samoa, as part of trying to give Tier 2 nations more opportunities at playing tier 1 nations at home for a pay day.

There are 4x more rugby players in England than Ireland, and 2.5x more top flight clubs. It stands to reason England could contest a higher level than Ireland without their first choice players. In fact, bar injuries the front row Ireland played in the summer would've usurped the Lions players on form and Big Prendergast has become a starter off the back of it.

Ireland also fielded a far more inexperienced squad than England - 13 uncapped players vs England's 10, and 208 total caps vs England's 560

Ireland have failed to rotate properly, and is a big black mark against Farrell imo but England's current success is mostly due to a coach actually picking on form and playing a game plan that maximises their strengths (instead of Jones' rather bizarre attempts to recreate Full Metal Jacket behind the scenes). Their youth pipeline is fruitful cos there's more players with more pathways into the elite game, and that has always been the case, they've just underachieved over the last decade relative to playing population and income
