An excellent report as ever. Whilst contemplating Brentford's defensive disintegration in the second half, I was mindful of the fact that we tried very hard (over what seemed to be quite a number of weeks) to buy Bentley from Southend. It didn't work out and I seem to recall that we acquired Smithies instead.
I think we dodged a bullet. I wasn't impressed with his performance at Loftus Road last season but I thought he was very poor on Saturday and more than partially responsible for their second half panic. Even though Joe didn't have the best of games, his calm assured presence has been a catalyst in our defensive resurgence since game five. |

Agree with Toboboly re: Cousins. OK in the first half but completely anonymous in the second, should have been replaced by Scowen in my opinion. Can't agree with Clive re: Cameron, I thought he was excellent in the first half and yes, gave the ball away a few times in the second period but looked a proper player to me. Overall a very, very good performance in the first half. We could have been in trouble in the second half against a better side than Millwall but we still had chances to score another couple of goals - but we need to start taking these chances in future games. |

I'm not sure that the issue with young Smyth related to their defenders being more aware of him than last season. It seemed to me (as someone watching the game from the paddocks) that he was being asked to play as a supplementary right back, with Kakay often being deployed closer to the two central defenders. And, like Pawel before him, little Smyth's ability to run at their defenders was being negated. Obviously you want him/anyone in that position to be the first point of defence and close down any opposition attacks that are started by their left back but I felt all his energies were being expended in that role and it left him a tad depleted. Perhaps he's better deployed as an impact substitute. |

You're right, ''being bad away from home is nothing new'' and for those of us who can still remember the old King; it seems to have been happening since time immemorial.
The programme from the Bolton game at Burnden Park in 1968 read, ''Rangers are not quite the same force away from home'' and that was the season we were promoted having finished in second place. We lost nine games that season, eight of them away from home. It makes you wonder whether it's just a fact of life; Christmas Day will always be the 25th December, QPR will always be rubbish away from Loftus Road! |

I think you're being a bit hard on Call The Midwife, Clive. This episode featured the Christmas/New Year period in 1962 and I remember it well. I'd just started my first paper round and nearly collapsed with frostbite every morning, after all it was the coldest winter since 1740 with average temperatures across the country around -6 C.
Indeed in an interesting piece of football history, the 3rd Round of the FA Cup took 66 days to complete that year, fixtures couldn't be undertaken and so the Pools Panel came into existence. One Yorkshire club (I think it was either Bradford or Barnsley) only played 2 games between the start of the freeze on 22nd December and the middle of March 1963. Even in London, Rangers had to play 11 matches in April in order to catch up on the matches cancelled between January and March. So mock all us old people's memories at your peril! |

This was probably the first time this season that our supporters left the ground with a genuine feel good factor so congratulations to Ollie, the squad and the fans.
I left scratching my head at Lynch's performance. I dig him out most weeks and (apart from the cross to Smith) he still can't pass the ball with any accuracy - but he won nearly everything in the air and on the ground yesterday and a showing like that will be sorely missed on Tuesday night. Many fans rightly criticised Baptiste for their goal but although he is a much more solid defender than I originally thought, pace is not one of his attributes and on this occasion he just wasn't quick enough to get close to Jota to foul him before he could do any damage.
There seems to be some differences of opinion over the non-penalty award and from my seat, it looked like a dive following minimal contact. Perhaps the Wolves Manager agreed as I seem to recall the same player being hauled off minutes later.
Finally, I agree with most posters about the quality of the referee. Although he appeared to book far more of our players than the oppositions and did nothing about their brutish central defender; indeed you could say that he should have read Miranda his rights! |

Yes, we've heard all about the 'merits' of squad rotation but during our most successful season we played 48 games and used just 16 players, 10 of whom played in 40 or more of those matches. Were the old time players fitter, stronger, more resilient or did the managers of yesteryear believe that continuity brought about the best results? |

Clive, thank you for your usual excellent report. The emergence of JET as a viable alternative to Charlie (should he leave in January) has suddenly become an interesting proposition. It appears that he has rediscovered the abilities that he presumably had when captaining Arsenal's Under 18's at the age of 16, making his first team debut at 18 and scoring in every round of the FA Youth Cup; which they won in 2008/2009 (my son is an Arsenal supporter unfortunately!) He obviously lost his way subsequently as loan spells with Blackpool, Doncaster and Cardiff, prior to joining Ipswich and Bristol City would attest. Interestingly he wasn't ''a player scarcely picked by Bristol City in League One last season'', the statistics indicate that he played 48 games but only scored 12 goals, so was he underperforming or was he used in a deeper or wider role? Maybe he is now playing in the position that he favours or perhaps at almost 25 years of age he has seen the light. Who knows? Maybe Sir Les has taken him under his wing or perhaps he is responding to Chris Ramsey's coaching. Whatever or whoever is responsible for his transformation, it is unfortunately likely to be shortlived as I fully expect the formation to be unchanged when Charlie is fit to resume first team duties. Perhaps CR will have a change of heart and go 442 but in all probability it will be back to the bench for JET I fear. |
