Marti on Leeds
at 17:26 8 Nov 2024

Ainsworth set the floor for these club interviews, Critchley nearly as bad. Warburton guarded, cautious and reliant on cliches but honest and 'with respect' respectful. Cifuentes also guarded but also, to my ear, not cliche-ridden, not full of BS and, as Clive rightly says, reveals far more in post-match sessions with journalists. Those with long memories (me!) will remember how terrible Alan Mullery was at media interviews. Gerry Francis never fluent but always honest enough and always with a sense of humour.

Sunderland Reflection
at 21:46 2 Nov 2024

Watched on CBS Sports stream in US and solo Brit commentator they had working the game was rightly v complimentary about Rangers performance. Even called Varane a 'monster' at one point. Four things struck me from afar:

1. Team moved the ball far more quickly than most games this season, especially first half, with a number of rapid one-twos creating space. Looks like something they had worked on. Got bogged down 2nd half when Mackems went into defensive shell.

2. Had the spectacle of Sunderland blatantly time wasting from sending off for rest of the game. Their keeper Moore booked on 70 minutes but did not seem to affect his speed of movement for the rest of the time out there. (Was he warned again by ref? Kind of thing you can't pick up streaming.)

3.Field looked far more comfortable at CB than in any of his other fill-in games at the back.

4. We got after them in midfield and pressed their defenders. They did not like it up 'em! Heartening to see.

Alternative approach would involve still being overwhelmingly negative with 10 men but occasionally counterattacking into the opponent's half. Nick a goal after HT and you win. Arteta Rorke's Drift approach shows the Ars are still not ready for prime time. Also Citeh poor and got out of jail because tired defenders went to sleep at a short corner. Also,, Drury is a git.

The Dave B channel on YouTube that Mr Barton is a part of is called Hoops and Dreams and has a website too with a forum. Has plenty of fine contributors including James and young (but getting older) George. Especially recommend their video previews of games.

Retro chanting
at 09:25 30 Aug 2024

I enjoyed fans in the Loft singing 'You've got a shit F-ing haircut' to Tatith Chong before his penalty miss and then giving him a reprise afterward. 12th Man that is, right there!

Also back in the day Fake Hoops fans chanted at our left back Brevett 'Rufus is a dog's name'...rude, annoying but also funny.

Would go full Graham Taylor. Two up front: Kane and Toney. Wingers Gordon and Palmer, dropping Moody Manc and Saka. Konsa in at back. Mix it up...plenty of long ball and occasionally surprise playing of football. Pure fantasy as Southgate will plod on, playing delusional way.

What is your second sport.
at 02:37 17 Jun 2024

Playing:

1. Running. Everything from Cross-Country to Road to middle distance on the track. Ran 3000 Steeplechase for Thames Valley Harriers in National League. Then got bad knee, had arthroscopic surgery and told by doc in my 30s to quit running altogether.

2. Football: captain of 3rd XI for Burlington Danes in late 70s. Very average up-and-back midfielder who shouted a lot and clapped my hands. V good 5-a-side and even did a bit of Futsal in last few years after my knee did not absolutely fall apart.

3. Hiking: got into this just before lockdowns and had marvellous 2 years plus walking all over the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains in the Los Angeles area. But the knee blew up again and doc told me to knock it off. Still great Indian Summer of my sporting life.

Watching:

1. Football: obviously never miss a game on QPR +, shout out to Jacob Tingle, but also follow MLS, LAFC is my team and standard is so much better than when I first started living in USA 25 years ago. And watch endless Premier League, even while hating the way it is run.

2. NBA: truly fantastic sport and highly misunderstood by many. Fan of the Clippers, the other team in LA after the Lakers. Tried really hard to like NFL and MLB and really don't.

Coaching:

Coached middle school Football, X-Country and Track & Field. Also coached and reffed in AYSO, soccer youth leagues when my sons played.

Good call to liken stupid Kane substitution to 1970 England W Germany WC Q-final.

Also, vividly recall then Villa boss Stephen Gerrard pulling off Phillipe Coutinho who had been absolutely brilliant in title deciding game at Man City in 2022 just after he had put Villa 0-2 up on 69 minutes. His plan...doubtless backed by one Mick Beale.. to 'shut up shop' and 'hold on to what we've got' had me shouting at TV. Man City of course come back to get 4th title in 5 years.

I had to work on Friday as 8 pm kickoff translated into 12-noon California time, so this is invaluable, thank you. Was in Ellerslie Road stand, School End side for '92 shellacking of soon-to-to-be Champions Leeds. Ray Wilkins through ball for B Allen goal favourite moment.

Hands off Lucas! Yes, he was not up to his usual standard yesterday and looked like he is struggling for fitness. But he has been a revelation since his arrival and is the best passer of the ball on the team. Also, his impact as a senior pro should not be minimized. He said in an interview a few weeks ago that he, Steve Cook and Jimmy Dunne have a 'coffee club' where they regularly meet up after training. That mutual respect on and off the field is crucial and that trio should be the heartbeat of the team next season.

It may be 'doable' in theory for Birmingham but remember they have just failed to beat dead-and-buried Rotherham and have the former QPR loan trio of Laird, Sanderson and Roberts.

Relief! Snap judgements from ESPN stream in US: Willock and Field both great. BBC Sport called Willock 'sensational' which is a bit OTT. But everyone put in a shift. Stream had a close-up of Marti's face during injury time and, my goodness, he looked nervous!

Agree. But he will still get slated with people focusing on the cross that hit the inside of the post going over his head. A lot of fans just don't like him for reasons that are abundantly clear: ex Chelsea. Now, not saying he is good but getting over-criticized.

The Black Cats vs Jude the Cat Match Thread

Mr Cifuentes told our official interviewer in his first answer after the game that he sees this as 2 points dropped. Interviewer then asks: 'do you see game as 2 points dropped?' and he confirms that is his view. Also says we did not create enough chances. Level-headed and serious and striking same note as many posters on this thread.

Does anyone know what the uses of a semi colon !!!
at 01:35 12 Mar 2024

How about this?: a semi-colon is halfway between a comma (slight pause) and a full stop (a complete end to a sentence). Therefore, a semi-colon is a longer pause (maybe even a 'pregnant pause'!). Those who placed the emphasis in this thread on punctuation being linked to how you would speak, or how you would read the words out loud, seem to me to be on the right tracks. And I use it and see other people use it most frequently for lists.

But, what do I know?

Dykes - WHAT and WHY??
at 17:47 3 Mar 2024

Let's not underplay the role he played in the goal either: he made the early run, pointed to Willock where he wanted the ball, and looked up to see Chair, before delivering the perfect ball. He showed in those moments the kind of mobility, intelligence and skill he is always slagged off for not having. What makes him so frustrating and divisive is the fact he can't deliver that kind of play on a consistent basis. Credit also to the manager who is doing centre forward by committee by mixing and matching Frey, Dykes and Armstrong in the last two games.
