2017/18 Season Review - Wesley Hoedt
at 13:27:16

I find it interesting that Yoshida's shortcomings are all his own fault but Hoedt's are down to the 'instability in the Saints defence'...
Hoedt has potential but he really needs to get stronger in the air, for a big lad he is beaten far too often. He's also much slower off the mark than our other defenders so needs to work on his reading of the game and therefore be less reactionary.

Will One More Win Be Enough ?
at 12:35:08

Unfortunately it's not all in our hands, but I generally agree. Avoid defeat against Everton whilst Bournemouth beat Swansea and City beat Huddersfield. Then beat Swansea and we should be safe (they really didn't look very good against Chelsea for long periods of time). We really don't want it to come down to our last game of the season and need to get a result against City!

What Was Behind Pellegrino's Strange Team Selections On Sunday ?
at 15:46:32

Nick, the game against Bournemouth is a game we would have been set up to go for a win. Pied is a more attacking minded full back so he was the obvious choice to fill in for the injured Cedric. However, Arsenal was always going to be a tougher game. We were always likely to be defending for 75% of the game so Stephens suited the game more as he is much stronger defensively.

What Was Behind Pellegrino's Strange Team Selections On Sunday ?
at 10:23:26

Think you could be grasping at straws a bit here. Yoshida is more mobile than Hoedt, so I think he was brought in to better deal with the likes of Lacazette, Sanchez and Ozil. A job that he did fantastically well. It was only when Giroud was brought on that Hoedt would've been seen as a better option and perhaps could've helped us prevent that goal.
Pied was decent against Bournemouth but I feel that he switched off a few times and his defensive positioning wasn't the best, so I can understand that Stephens was brought in to give a bit more defensive solidity. In fact Stephens was one of the best players on the pitch, so can't really see why you are questioning the decision to play him.
Romeu and Hojbjerg have both been in excellent form recently so would be harsh to drop either of them for Lemina unless we were going to change to a 433, in which case he could have been brought in for JWP.

The First 10 Games: three questions that will be answered
at 11:14:28

Excellent article. I think it says a lot about our current fan base when you consider the mood after the Saint-Ettiene game compared to now. There seems to be a good majority of fair-weather, reactionary "fans".
I'm quietly optimistic. Providing we sign 1-2 quality CB's and get someone in that can cover with Romeu, then we can really make a push for top 6.

Van Dijk Story Takes Another Twist
at 09:34:59

I think the situation has dragged on too far now, he can't come back into the team. I agree in principle with leaving him to rot in the reserves but I think he's too valuable to not cash in on. Sell him to anyone other than Liverpool though! Even if we have to knock the price down to £50m or so.

Would love Nagelsmann but can't see it happening. He has just guided Hoffenheim into the Champion's League, something we can't offer unfortunately.

Any Porto In A Storm For Claude Puel ?
at 11:43:25

Puel leaving for Porto might be the most elegant solution for all parties. Puel would get a more prestigious job (with much better weather!), we would avoid sacking him and we would also pocket some compensation since he still has a couple of years on his contract.

Very proud of how we performed. Everyone (bar Forster) played fantastically well IMO. Special mentions to Yoshida and Gabbiadini!

Can Ryan Bertrand Be The Answer In The Centre Of Defence ?
at 10:56:47

Yoshida gives 100% every game he plays for us. Sure, he makes the odd mistake but he makes up for that with usually 3 or 4 times as many excellent tackles/clearances. He's an international with over 70 caps and has played over 100 games for us. I think you need to give him a break. This season he has been getting the most consistent game-time he has ever had at the club and he has been performing fantastically. I think you need to stop bashing Yoshida and actually pay attention to how plays for us...

Saints V Swansea City The Verdict
at 12:03:07

I think Redmond's is definitely the worse miss. Austin is running full pelt and stretching to get on the end of the cross and the ball bobbles a little in front of him. Whereas Redmond has just sold the defender, has a dead ball 12 or so yards out and still sends it 3 feet over the bar.
Don't get me wrong, I think Redmond is a good player and a good signing but we can't get away with playing him and Long as our two strikers, neither of them are clinical enough. If one of them were through on goal you still wouldn't feel confident in them scoring. Once Austin and J-Rod are match-fit we need to be starting one of them each game, they know how to hit the target.

Koeman Says No One Leaves
at 11:44:00

I think we could have approached this transfer window a lot better. If we decided to strengthen and splash the cash on the likes of Austin, Shaqiri, Payet, N'Zonzi, Toby, we could've really pushed on all fronts and possibly achieved a top 6 finish this season. I still have faith we have signed some good players and we will still be fine this season, but if we had the ambition we could have really cemented ourselves as a top team this season.

Caulker Done Deal
at 15:35:23

I'm very happy with this signing, was hoping we would have signed him from Cardiff instead of QPR. His last season wasn't great but QPR as a whole were pretty dire. There's very little risk with this signing too, if he doesn't work out then we can let the option to buy run out, just like Aldewiereld-gate.

I'm hoping Gaston gets given another chance this season. I think with the greater variety of attackers we have now, he could do better. Especially if we go far in Europe the extra competition would be welcome.
