In retrospect, the context for Potter's comments regarding the selection for the Sheffield United match seems clearer. When he said that as football is a team sport, those who look after only themselves while neglecting their team responsibilities should not be playing football. Maybe Ayew's consciousness of guilt made him decide to retaliate by refusing to train - even though he wasn't mentioned by name. If one is told that he doesn't even belong in football while aspiring for the highest levels of the game, it has got to be humbling.

Both of these fine players have been or are linked with Swansea City. Which would you rather have and why? I think Chirivella is valued at roughly half of what Woods is but still seems like a cracking prospect. Klopp seemed impressed with him in preseason, so maybe his stock has risen. |

Last year, he was being played in a position ill-suited to him until Carvalhal arrived. Nevertheless, it is not so easy to say he is a poor finisher when he has scored 6 goals on only 61 shots at the Premier League level. The fact that he was involved in goal in more than a third of his appearances at Championship level is a better indication of what he can do given a system suited to him. When given some freedom and space, Clucas has shown he is a dangerous player. |

He has 6 goals and 9 assists in 47 appearances in the Championship while playing as a midfielder. Those are good numbers, and it was easy to see that he is a confident finisher. [Post edited 6 Aug 2018 17:29]

He showed some good finishing ability last season. He is dangerous when he is in the box and has supply. I can imagine him getting on the end of Montero's crosses and Celina's through balls. |

Depends on when the new manager arrives. Fitness cannot be drastically improved midseason. The only recent hires that have enjoyed preseason are Guidolin and Potter. The performances under Guidolin were mostly good. And given the circumstances, the ones under Potter have also been as good as can be reasonably expected. |

Regardless of Clucas' destination, the modus operandi of Swansea must change under Potter, and Potter's hire itself should have been indicative of this. This modus operandi centres on making the current players as good as they can be before looking outside the club for ways to improve the squad. And so far, most of the players seem to be responding well. Almost all players can improve drastically with improved fitness and better team play. |

Clucas could be useful as a backup to McBurnie until a striker is signed. He can also offer a good option out wide when some height on the wings is required. His long strides and rather unimpressive close control don't make him a good player in the central midfield anyway. [Post edited 6 Aug 2018 15:50]

Yes, upon closer view, it looks like a very accurate flick. Shows McBurnie raises the synergy of the whole. McBurnie could have contributed a lot to Swansea's survival pursuit last season. Don't understand why he was loaned. |

I don't think Fulton is going anywhere. He's a smart player and makes good decisions. And he's shown that he can score the occasional goal. He was making great strides under Guidolin and probably would have been picked often under him, but Guidolin was sacked prematurely.
With Fulton's height and outstanding heading ability, he's shown that he offers something different. There will be games in this league when a tall CDM will be needed, and I'm sure Potter would like to have him around. Potter mentioned that taking him off for Dhanda in the last match was a risk as Dhanda doesn't provide much defensively against the aerial threat, so this is an indication that Potter finds Fulton useful. |

I don't understand all the criticism of Routledge given his lack of regular playing time in recent seasons. When he has played, he has been by far the most reliable and willing defender, and this is important when one is not so strong in the fullback positions. I thought that he showed his tremendous ability during Laudrup's first season, and he was clearly one of the best three players on the squad that season. Such high standard of performance is very difficult to match especially when subsequent managers are more interested in maintaining shape and defending that keeping the ball. Under Guidolin, Routledge became the main outlet and he showed signs of recovering his form, but Guidolin wasn't kept long enough to allow this to happen. I think Routledge still has plenty to offer at Swansea and will make valuable contributions. I think Potter's emphasis on open play with lots of movement fueled by high levels of fitness will make Routledge able to play closer to his potential. |

There are of course many difficulties in signing the players that would improve Swansea. The club's situation is not much different than it was during the last transfer window, when it was reported that most of the targets simply weren't interested in coming to a team with such a small chance of surviving the relegation battle. And as you know, many players and clubs will simply wait until August 9 or August 30 to make a decision, especially those players that have several options on the table - and talented players usually have several options to choose from. As for Mawson and Fernandez, I am sure they are probably going to wait until the transfer deadlines approach before making their decision, as so much movement is yet to happen for all clubs.
I am pleased with the players that have come in, and I don't think it is a given that the Ayews are definitely going to move. Andre will have to make sure that he has a steady run of games to fully regain his form after the long injury layoff, so this is likelier to happen at Swansea or another championship club than anywhere else. Besides, I don't think the Swansea hierarchy will allow him to be sold for the amount that he is probably being valued at less than one season after spending such a large sum. His value would have to be raised through excellent performances first, and I think Andre would have been aware of this when he signed the contract in the first place. |

I wonder how many Muslim players Swansea has had in its history. It seems every time Swansea is linked with a Muslim player, they are going elsewhere. Barrow is apparently a Muslim, but he wasn't so successful at Swansea, and I wonder whether he had trouble adapting to life in Swansea. Do you think the facilities, knowledge, staff, and policies are adequate to support the lifestyle of Muslim athetes at Swansea? [Post edited 30 Jun 2018 13:45]

It seems Benitez was so traumatised by Laudrup's side beating him in the League Cup semifinals that the is signing the players who defeated his Chelsea without realising the success Swansea had that year was mostly due to the fact that the manager was able to bring out their potential. He also seems to fancy players with the ability to pass long and this ability Ki has in spades, even though he seems to have few other qualities especially defensively. In the year Ki won the Player of the Year honours, I think he was one fo the league leaders for distance covered. But this is the only year he made this list. This seems to suggest that Ki's fitness and industry has been sorely lacking with the exception of this season. |
