Southampton V Wolverhampton Wanderers The Verdict
at 12:18:29

First time for a while that I've been able to see the whole Saints game. I have to admit that my impressions of it mirror exactly what Nick wrote in his verdit. I hope we progress as the team settles in more. Being solid at the back provides a bit of confidence that results will improve.

Hasenhuttl Marks His Second Anniversary At St Mary's With A Love Letter To The Club

Brilliant stuff ! It's hard to find words to describe how amazing it is to have such an inspiring and competent manager at Saints. 2020 has been such a difficult year for everyone but Southampton FC has been the bright light keeping my (our?) spirits up. These are the good times we all hope for, let's make the most of them. Thank you.

Initial Reports On Danny Ings Knee Injury Look Good.
at 13:34:38

Great to hear ! Giving him a few weeks off till after the international break would seem the sensible thing to do. Even though Adams is doing well, Ings won't be the same on Friday. Be great to get another 3 points in the bag but my gut feeling is that Newcastle will be a tough game all things considered.

Nice preview but 0-0 are pretty rare lately. I'm going for 3-2 to Saints.

Saints At Chelsea The Verdict
at 23:26:58

Wow, seven years have flown by but so much water has passed under the bridge since. The initial anger hearing of Atkins demise after the battling away draw at Chelsea still seems like a recent memory. Nice to repeat and another nice verdict from you. Happy for Gunn to have made the most of his chance. This confidence boost is a relief after the loss to West Ham. Hoedt and Gabbi not even on the bench... JWP getting a game, Romeo carded as per, PEH having a break, Long doing his stuff, shane we didn't nick it at the last. Cheers and Happy New Year to Saints everywhere !

Great day, excellent and happy match report ! Agree with everything, would just add that McCarthy also made some important saves. Hope that the confidence this gives the team will see us get free pints, sorry three points at Huddersfield.

Ings And Cedric In Contention For Burnley Game
at 11:47:13

Yeah as you say, it's a nice provlem to have. Competition for places is key to getting the most out of players. Could be a smart move to play Targett this week, let him show what he can do and what level Cédric needs to play at to be picked.

I'm feeling positive about the season now we have added Ings to the squad, hope there's a good spirit in the dressing room and in the stands.

Mark Hughes Appointed Saints Manager Official !
at 09:18:31

Saints have already done the left-field trendy take a chance on some overseas coaches bit and that has got us to this point. I'm fed up with seeing lesser players doing better than ours because they have more fight and desire to win, while we pussy foot around.

I welcome Sparky as the best solution to our current situation, I hope he puts the spirit back into the team and gets us fighting for points again. There's probably someone better available out there who might accept the post, but I've no idea who and I don't want us to make any more risky appointments. He's an ex-saint with bags of experience and a point to prove. Ok, it might not work but I think he's the best bet right now.

Welcome back Sparky !

Should A Change Be Made Now ! Vote Now !
at 15:51:57

I'm also No voter. I wanted MP & co sacked at the start of the last transfer window but it's far too late now, we have to stick with him come what may.

Pardew was told he'd be sacked if they lost to Watford, which they did. However, WBA changed their minds and said publicly that they couldn't find anyone better than Pardew right now. If WBA can't find someone before the end of the season, we're probably in the same situation.

Shouting to the rooftops about wanting MP sacked now isn't going to help us, it's more likely to hurt the team. Frankly I wish you'd all shut up and support the team properly in it's time of need and then make your feelings heard when our status for next season is settled.

Van Dijk Return Should Not Be A Distraction For Saints Fans
at 11:46:08

Agree with previous posters. Let's concentrate on winning the game. That'll hurt him more than anything. Would be great if he played badly, gave away a penalty or a goal but most Saints want the 3 points more than a VVD sideshow, hopefully...

Pellegrino Now Has To Show He Can Get It Right !
at 14:41:29

@Consigliere. I'm not so sure about the Voltaire quote. He wrote to encourage the others, not to discourage them. They've been killing their leaders since the Frankish kingdoms were first united under one ruler, when most of the original kings were murdered by their own sons who were conned into believing they would be taking their place. Back stabbing your boss/captain even your friends is quite normal in France. So I think Voltaire meant by killing admirals the others would be encouraged when the existing order changes, providing hope to the ambitions of all the lesser ranks.

So in Virgil's case, that translates to letting him get his big payday to encourage the ambitions of the other players, n'est ce pas ?

@Saintnick, thanks for trying to make this site a better place to talk football. However, I think you need to buy a new calculator, perhaps one with a memory ;)

Saints At West Bromwich Albion The Verdict

Great result and performance. Proves we can play, now we need to show we can keep doing it, week in week out. If our luck changes too then perhaps we'll scrape though. Let's hope so.

Saints V Brighton The Verdict
at 11:00:07

Good verdict. A line has been crossed now. Obviously, MP has to go but Les Reed hired and refused to fire him so his position is also untenable. No good manager will want to work for him anyway. They have to go in the next few days or it'll be too late anyway.

Saints At Chelsea The Verdict
at 12:29:37

Nick, re: backs to the wall desperation. Ok, against Man City contenders for best ever premier league team we were desperate towards the end but still in the game. Against Chelsea, the current champions who count several world class players in their team, including Hazard and Kanté, possibly the most influential player in the world to have in any team for any match. Having been thrashed at home midweek and with a days less rest we still had 46% possession and only conceded from a free kick deep into first half injury time, where the defender in the wall could have done better. Chelsea were relieved to hear the final whistle and bag the 3 points. It wasn't by any means perfect but we gave them a game and could have snatched a draw. If that's desperate then I guess you're lucky you don't support most other teams in England.

Saints At Chelsea The Verdict

Sorry, I don't normally have much problem with what you write but this is such a load of rubbish. Get a grip. We put in a good defensive performance and didn't get much luck going forward. Those who let us down midweek were punished and others came in. Ward Prowse can cover for Cédric while he's injured on that performance, then we can benefit from his dead ball skills without weakening the midfield. Yoshida and Hoedt were good together. Bertrand was too. Charlie should be on form for the next game. Lemina is back up to speed after his injury. This isn't so different from the Man City game, got nothing but some reasons to be cheerful are there if you want to see them rather than just moaning and stirring things up.

Saints V Leicester City The Verdict
at 10:30:05

Claude Puel didn't get much credit with us and now he's getting too much at Leicester. Before he came they were already playing really well but not getting the results they deserved (which happens a lot in the prem). They've now got their tails up mainly due to increased confidence momentum. Most teams would have struggled against them last night, especially with 2 games a week.

I think we started well enough but things went tits up quickly once they started scoring. Another major factor was the weather and pitch conditions.

For me, the main problem with MP is his substitutions. It was obvious the formation wasn't right and we should've changed something quickly. Maybe matched their 3 at the back. Also the fact that Charlie et Cédric played 90 minutes when we're playing away at Chelsea (who've had an extra days rest) on Saturday. Let's hope he learns from these mistakes sharpish or it could ruin his reputation.

I don't think we're at the stage where MP has definitely failed and needs replacing. I would like to see some of the backroom staff changed, in particular Black. If we sit on our laurels, then I'd like the new owner to find a replacement for Reed whose record is no longer good enough to protect him. I'd prefer that to gambling on yet another new manager at this stage.
