His playing years were just before my time, yet I find myself surprisingly emotional about Sir Bobby's passing. There is something about his personality that I found so impressive and moving - he seemed modest, a true gent. And of course his story (surviving Munich and going on to have such a career) was heroic. It is so poignant to think of him suffering from dementia in his final years, too. RIP to a true great. |

It's still sort of a free country and those who pay their money can make any noises they want. But if I imagine a crowd of red-faced men (the really sweary aggressive ones almost always are men), many of them drunk or coked up, stumbling to the touchline to scream the usual witless cliches ("Fark off you farking carnt", etc) to a grim-faced Gareth Ainsworth as he applauds their support, even if it's following the Rs thirteenth consecutive defeat, I know who the real man will be in that picture. Leaving early? A bit childish, but fine. Booing, if you must- though it always seems like a comical, unnatural sound to me. Yelling expletives and threats? I don't care that you were born on the White City Estate or that your dad's ashes were scattered on the astroturf: you're a massive bellend, get a grip. [Post edited 8 Aug 2023 21:01]

I was struck by how emotional the City players were after the game and I find a lot of them perfectly likeable. Perhaps because the match was so tight, the moment of victory seemed overwhelming for them, and for a few minutes I was able to ignore the fact that they are are earning obscene money paid by repulsive and corrupt people, and see De Brunye, Haaland and Grealish et al as extremely dedicated and talented young men who had just reached the pinnacle of achievement in the game. Any footballer would dream of that, and I found it moving to witness. |

Perhaps I should let it go, but the level of disrespect shown during that disgusted me. Sometimes going to football blinds us to terrible behaviour - but that was off the scale, horrible. Obviously the scrote QPR supporter who shouted should be banned, but any Millwall fans hearing that could have righteously ignored it, at least until the minute was over. For us to excuse them by saying it was "provoked" is far too generous: it's 60 seconds, FFS. For hundreds of them to react in that moronic way was appalling, even for them - and I can't help thinking they would never have done that if it was for the Queen or British veterans.

Thanks, Brian: this is such a wonderful, inspiring and useful thread! I've just read through the whole thing with a pen and paper, listing ideas - and am now doing a bit of research for my next holiday, whenever that might be. For starters, I loved San Sebastian when I visited years ago, so am thinking of combining that with the French Basque places mentioned. If money were no object, I could happily live out the rest of my days visiting and revisiting places listed on this thread.
What's my contribution? I'm not sure, but for me, it would have to be somewhere by a warm ocean, ideally facing west. I lived close to the sea in The Gambia for two years and following an evening swim with a beachside meal whilst watching the sun setting over the wild ocean became a religion for me. To have daily access to the sensation of waves crashing over my skin, the sound and smell of the ocean and watching the sinking sun with the taste of grilled fish washed down with a Julbrew - sweet mother of Stanley Bowles, that was living! Thought of quoting my favourite bits of this but then realised I'd end up copying the entire thing. What a game, and what an essay. That's why I pay a little bit for the Patreon thing now, even though I don't really use it. Reading writing as well-informed, warm, observant, sharp and witty as this without paying something feels wrong. |

I really really hope we keep Warburton, for the controversial and strange reason that he's done/is doing a great job. Apart from anything else, we're still (amazingly, it seems to me) only 3 points off the play-off places and with an abrupt chance in form - unlikely, sure, but stranger things happen all the time even to us- we could just make it. Fair enough, but by that logic you can never be proud of a QPR win either pal, unless we are playing a team with greater resources. Without Jim Gregory's investment in the 60s there would have been no League Cup win, no Rodney or Stanley... Oddly, Gregory was a Fulham fan!

Everything points to a humiliating thrashing for us yet... I can't wait! We can still do this - as a fan, I couldn't be more up for it. Forget about recent form, injuries and so on: a glance at the table shows we are right up there and still have every chance of scraping into the play- offs. Let's hope we can channel the spirit of North Macedonia and kick start a brilliant April.

Our players may have lost form but Clive Whittingham never does: a biting, perceptive and darkly witty report as always. Obviously we're missing a goalscorer on song: Willock's beautiful pass deserved a goal, and how much does Gray earn not to hit the target then? I'm a natural optimist and note that for all our dip in form, somehow, (miraculously it seems to me) we are still in fifth place. The games we've lost lately have only been by the odd goal: with a bit (OK, a lot) more urgency to create chances and maybe a fit Dykes back, I see no reason why we can't recover our mojo and scrape into the playoffs. On their day these players have shown themselves to be capable of a play-off place and there's no manager in the division I'd rather have than Warburton: easy way schmeasy way, I was as cheesed off as anyone yesterday but am still relishing the run in.
