Building blocks and iterative improvements. 16:20 - Nov 7 with 741 viewsReslovenSwan1

Duff made some pretty interesting comments after the Sunderland game. He talked about spirit and mentality which is standard fare and perfectly valid.

He noted Swansea were among the worst at set pieces last season and are now amongst the best in the league. He noted that Swansea were stated to have no good defenders last season. "well they are good defenders" it seems.

Under Martin and actually Potter it seemed to me all the fluid forward football was being undone by basic defensive mistakes or lack of application. Both Potter and Martin appeared "consensual" managers. I wonder if a hard case coach might be more suitable when defenders need an incentive to get a block in and potentially get hurt. I think it was Ashby who stated Margetson was a driving force in set piece defence as he was under Cooper presumably.

Duff has talked about getting the defensive basics right as a priority over playing the open flowing football Swansea are renowned for. Substance first and then style. Under Brendan Swansea hard the hardened nuts Monk Williams Tate and Taylor with Rangel able to run all day. Darling Cabango see to be doing a lot better and Humphries is class. (a perfect loan for him I would think). Wood and Azeem are powerful and fast athletes to come back in. I see Azeem as a mark up on Fulton as a DFM. He has quicker feet.

It seems to me the building blocks are rapidly forming. A new central striker, fast winger and creative and nimble midfielder in January will see Swansea evolve and challenge.

I disagree on the defenders comment from last season, they were fine it was just they couldn’t make decisions on when to pass out and when not to. Especially Fisher who if Benda was fit we would have made the play offs I’m certain.

There wasn’t a lot of fluid football under Martin, that was the problem. We had glimpses of it and when we did we looked fantastic, but it was few and far between.

If we were fluid, we wouldn’t have had to rely on Piroe so heavily, just as Cooper did with Ayew.

Duff has shored us up defensively to an extent. Leicester, Blackburn and Sunderland all had a glut of chances, but to be fair, we aren’t conceding many. He really needs to work on constructing attacks though. We’re way too easy to nullify. The couple of games he gave Lowe, Yates and Cullen more licence to interchange, we looked quite threatening. Plymouth was one, can’t remember the others but they were around that time.
