Would you want to live in his home if you was though? He's always been a bit of an enigma.

As I highlighted initially. Viz, we should embrace ,welcome AND THANK prisoners on release from sentence . He didn’t make any exceptions either. Not sure I’d embrace someone who wipes out someone by motor vehicle when pyssed,at least not in the way Sprephen suggests He’s brilliant but loopy. I have to say I’m rather empty of respect and love when it comes to prisoners

Just watched it. I thought he was excellent. Those words weren’t his, they were directly quoted from a letter Oscar Wilde wrote to the press after he was released. Fry used it to make the point that only 6% of prisoners are inside for violent crimes (and says of course they should be for everyone’s safety), and that for others we should be looking at other forms of rehabilitation to try an ensure there’s less reoffending and in turn keeping future prison numbers/costs down. Apologies for being pedantic but he’s a bit of a hero of mine and I couldn’t believe he said those things.

Are you saying he didn’t say those words? Wife watched it and he said exactly what I say . He is a typical wispy washy lovie who should save his love for those whom are victims of crimes. Prison is a last resort as a sentence .

He said exactly those words following this sentence: “In Oscar Wilde’s letter to the press following his release from prison, he said…”. So as I posted, not actually his words.

Interesting debate. He did reference Oscar Wilde, but he made it pretty clear he agreed with the sentiment. They certainly have a point about overcrowding, lack of rehabilitation programs and sub standard conditions having an impact on re offending rates. As for embracing people leaving jail, that’s way too broad a spectrum to take a holistic view on.

We defiantly need to do something. Rehabilitating non-violent offenders seems a sensible start.

Non violent doesn’t mean the crime is any less harrowing . Fraud is “ non violent” but ultimately lethal. Why are we concerned with prisoners welfare when we have old people selling their homes and seeing their life savings stolen by a “ Care” home. Why doesn’t Fry bleed for these poor buggers I ll tell you why, because these old folk are virtually anonymous and forgotten by society. They are prisoners ,make no mistake,in their own bedroom. The food for prisoners is cordon blue in comparison with the horse feed care homes provide . This subject makes me seethe frankly so Om bailing out right now. [Post edited 10 Sep 2023 15:59]

It’s possible to think that non-violent criminals can use support not to reoffend so everyone wins and still be concerned on other issues. Fry was invited onto the show to discuss prisons. It would have been odd and time consuming if he had to talk about every other topic of concern. The prison population had doubled in the last couple of decades. Doesn’t seem to be working, does it?

I’m more concerned with them not reoffending than the living conditions when they are inside.

That's assuming they can be rehabilitated. Some "non violent" crimes have terrible consequences. Old people fleeced of thousands of pounds, people driven to despair and suicide. Each crime meeds judging on its own outcomes and the punishment should fit those outcomes. Paedophiles don't always use violence but are they any the less damaging?

Themselves for anyone not understanding the state we re in. Keith raises a good point. Burglary is amongst the most violent of offences Your home,it’s possessions, your privacy violated and nowadays not even visited by CID And we worry more about the Perps. Why? Anyone…
