I did not realise I understood Dutch on 14:16 - Aug 13 by ReslovenSwan1
French and Welsh. The French teacher was a dinosaur but i still remember quite a bit.
I took French,German, Latin and welsh for short time . Latin gives one a base for southern European languages although Portuguese is more a Romansh tongue and quite tricky . Speak German and you will get the drift of Dutch I’ve used it in The Hague to impress .

Basque is an unusual one. It's a bit of a mystery. Been learning Spanish for a while.. slowly getting better. The one thing I would advice any kid to do...and I wish I would have taken my own advice. Is learn languages . Find a skill or profession and another language and the worlds your Lobster!

Learning a language is great, but it has to be done properly, so you can be fluent and correct. It takes a lot of time and effort. 10 mins a day on duo lingo won't do the trick. You need to read newspapers, listen to tv and really immerse yourself into it, if it's going to be good enough to get you a job using that language. It's more difficult now after Brexit too

Good post. It is one thing to learn a language grammatically ,quite another to speak it to a native.the real issue is replying to a native as one s ear has to attune to the foreign tongue . I am fluent in French until I engage with native French speakers then it’s back to base .
I find Spanish easy to learn grammar wise but nightmarish to converse in as the language has to flow. Portuguese even more so. German is easiest to listen to and u derstandcas it’s clearer. The gutteral nature of Dutch adds a new dimension.

Welsh worst of all
With any language the passive skills come before the active ones. reading and understanding come before the speaking and writing. I found German grammar difficult

German word order is odd to us but waiting for the verb at the end of a sentence adds a little frisson to discourse .
Hoch Deutsch is spoken by relatively few . Loads of dialects in Germany and Austria

Completely agree. Spending prolonged time in the country of your language choice. Speaking with the locals is the best way to do it. lf you can.
