Like many terms used today, people uttering them don’t have the first clue what they mean.
I still laugh at “facist” getting thrown about like it’s nothing, usually toward people that don’t agree with them. I have heard the word “fascist” possibly 200 times last year and it was used correctly maybe twice.
The level of collective intelligence I think is decreasing among people in general. Everyone too busy on Tiktok and Twitter to actually look up and see the world and learn it’s contents. |  |

I’d be inclined to cut Cole a lot of slack there as I genuinely think he was using the term in its original form. He was raised by a deeply religious west African woman and it’s safe odds that a lot of the frames of reference he was brought up with are Scriptural.
In Biblical terms a ‘holocaust’ is a sacrifice brought out to be consumed by fire. That was how Wilfred Owen used the term and I’m sure that was what Cole intended too.
Anyway, he has formally apologised now for an offence he didn’t realise he was giving. If you want an emblem to sum up the last few years that’s it, right there. |  |

There are an awful lot of more appropriate synonyms to use though. If you’re going to be a professional broadcaster you do need to moderate your language. If for example, picking a player at random let’s say mason Greenwood scores and looks really happy it would be inappropriate for the commentators to say he looks really gay, even though it’s the original meaning of the word. | | | |
