Council housing provided decent quality, affordable housing that gave councils small profits too. We need to bring it back and do away with this reliance on housing associations that aren't cheap and private landlords who charge a fortune, that's before we get near slum landlords. All Thatcher did was to throw massive profits into the hands of the already rich or people who would go on to become rich. Older council houses were very well built and usually had decent sized gardens. Modern red brick estates are often shoddily built with tiny gardens and 20-30% smaller than a good Victorian terraced with the same number of rooms. What successive governments have done to this country....oh here I go again. I'll shut up now

Agreed. We also need to get rid of the council house stigma. We don’t need also successful people preaching about their working class council house roots . We always had our own house in Swansea . My dad s family had money,my mothers nothing and they rented until they died . Two contrasts indeed. Landlords eh

As someone who purchased their council house and still living in it after 25 years or so I can honestly say it was the best opportunity that any government gave me to better myself . We had no money saved for a deposit and this was the only way for me to get onto the property ladder. I totally agree that successive governments have ignored the plight of those desperate for somewhere to live and even now despite acknowledgment that social housing is in crisis very little is being done to alleviate the problem. Over half my road is now private purchased with the original buyers still living here so those houses haven't been "lost" as the occupiers would still need to live somewhere .The problem is the money raised from selling the housing stock has not been reinvested and all political parties can be held accountable for that .

The only problem with the right to buy is that local authorities were prevented from reinvesting the proceeds into more social housing. The actual idea of giving hundreds of thousands, maybe even millions of working class people the chance to finally own property of their own was one of the better ideas to come from that era.

They only check the ones that are designated HMO’s….most student areas are though so I’m surprised they’d get away with substandard accommodation. I’ve got a few, ones had an inspection, the other two haven’t.
