| ARSENAL ROBBED BY VAR! WHATS THE POINT on 20:49 - Nov 4 with 1703 views | dobjack2 | I assume that what the VAR couldn't be certain of was whether part of the ball was overhanging the line in play based on the camera angle they had to go on. Similarly they couldn't tell whether Gordon was offside when the ball was played to him, although my gut feeling was that Gordon was offside. As VAR could not be certain that the whole of the ball was out of play or that Gordon was definitely offside they had nothing to overturn the goal, so it stood. It's one that will be argued about. | | | |

I agree about the byline. But I think the offside wasn’t given, because the ball came back to Gordon off the defender, plus it even looked to me as if the ball went backwards to Gordon, so again can’t be offside.

I absolutely hate that, the ball should be clearly inside the quadrant its an absolute joke that the ball can leagally be place of the outest of edges on the line of the quadrant. [Post edited 4 Nov 2023 23:21]

I agree Max What is the point of the quadrant if not to dictate that the ball should be wholly within it. Nowadays as long as it is within touching distance it is acceptable I did feel Newcastle were lucky to get the goal given, but glad they won

The ball going backwards has no relevance to off side and never has. Even if the ball is passed backwards and and a player runs back, from an offside position to collect it, he is offside. You can't be offside if you are behind the ball people often confuse the two.

The official reason that VAR couldn't rule on the offside was that they couldn't tell when the ball was passed to Gordon. If they could have seen when the ball was passed and it came off the defender there would have been another debate about whether the defender deliberately played the ball. A no win situation for officials as one team is going to be happy and one furious with the goal being given. I agree with the decision to award the goal as there was no conclusive evidence to disallow it. I'm sure that Arteta and Arsenal fans would disagree. The ball out of play issue does again reveal the limitations of technology based on camera angles. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I agree with your view about corner kicks, however, I believe that the rules say that the ball should be within the quadrant rather than wholly within. A simple rule change but one that I don't think the law/rule makers care enough about to change.
| ARSENAL ROBBED BY VAR! WHATS THE POINT on 14:34 - Nov 5 with 1292 views | Joesus_Of_Narbereth | Think the defender tried to buy a free kick by throwing himself down instead of actually defending the ball too. He could have just headed it away. | |
