It's a good game with tremendous athletes and ball in hand play time but really is minority sport except for Australia. Not that is a problem.
Union has a lot of criticism but when played well is a superior sport. I think in recent years smaller Union nations have become far more competitive against the big boys. If the Pacific Island teams had more backing they would also be more competitive. The League World Cup will go to either Australia or New Zealand again. League was formed because working class men were not afforded compensation for playing,mainly because they were miners and the southern based Union game had barristers,doctors,bankers playng the game.
The game is not superior for many. Union is seen as a game for fat posh boys whom the game helps because of the ludicrous stoppages in play,ie the pitiful resetting scrums where the ball is rarely put in straight and lines out farce.
It is miles faster than Union and it is all action. Consider the static nature of Union and the endless punting of the ball hoping it is dropped to create a chance. That or a breakdown that sees pumped up big boys crashing into each other. It's not a good show at all.
Union is detested by many in the M62 corridor and the history of Union with its fetid racism is nothing but inglorious.
I have been fortunate to see the Kangaroos several times whilst they've been on tour here. I saw the last World Cup final . It is an art as to how they find space ,tackle ,and create opportunities within 6 tackles. No 20 tedious Union plays of a team trying to smash their way over a try line 5 yards away. They are incredible a sight.
Most Union to League forwards found it difficult because they werent fit enough or fast enough physically or mentally.
Finally ,if you have the opportunity one day,have a word with Jiffy . Great at both codes and top bloke.

As I said I enjoy Union more for all its faults. Yes the game up North changed because of the North South divide and the players rightfully wanting to be remunerated. Let's be honest though in England they have a huge upper class element to their game but clubs like Glos, Exeter, Bristol will have a huge working class element. Very much like Welsh clubs had one time. Regions to me were a huge mistake.
Munster in Ireland have a huge working class support. I believe Roy Keane used to support them as a youngsters.
There is some animosity between Union and League fans. Which is a pity because a lot of people like both [Post edited 26 Aug 2022 20:56]
