I’ll think you’ll find Cardiff is much closer to Swansea and nowhere near Bristol in terms of history. Bristol became a city over 400 years before Cardiff and has been a major port for around 1000 years.
I think it’s a case of the little green eyed monster for you lot whilst looking adoringly at your bigger neighbours across the estuary. |  |

Far from it these days. I lived there for five years about 10 yrs ago. The worm turned. They struggle for a decent music venue also. Cardiff started to Nick businesses off them also in the last 5/10 years.
