Wine white or red 19:36 - Feb 26 with 2085 views | max936 | What's your recommendations, for choice's of both red and white? I'm enjoying a drop of 19Crimes now after me Tea, I do prefer the Apothic red though, their dark red is nice to, as is 19Crimes Ultimate, standard 19Crimes doesn't have enough body for me though and its seems a bit dry, that said I do enjoy it, a neighbour give me a Bordeux 2018 byt Le Chai on my birthday last month, that was superb, Looking to broaden my choices as there must be plenty of other wines out there, that are just as nice. Wine white or red on 10:35 - Feb 27 with 1173 views | Professor | Too much tannins in what you like for me ( or my GI tract at least) Max. Whilst I love Shiraz/Syrah based red wine, either New World or more classical Southern French, I tend to stick to more Pinot Noir and the lighter reds like Gamay. Raynor’s Malbec suggestion may be the route for you. My tip is to avoid brands ‘19 Crimes’ ‘Jam Shed ‘ etc are all good wines but poor value. If you want great wines then merchants like Berry Bros, Tanners or the Wine Society are the place, but hard on the wallet. Best value has to be Lidl and Aldi. The latter has astonishingly good wines at the £5-10 mark. Free delivery over 30quid online too. They have some 6 bottle selections at the moment- may be worth a punt to see what suits you. I would bet on some Argie Malbec.

Max- Tannins are a natural chemical found in plants including in fruit, tea and coffee. They are found in grape skins and an important component in the flavour and ‘mouthfeel’ of red wines. They give red wines that silky feel and why they dry the mouth. Grapes with thick skins like Shiraz, Cabernets, Tempranillo and Malbec have higher levels. They give more body to the wine. Thin skinned varieties like Pinot Noir and Gamay have less and make a lighter wine- notably in the case of Gamay, Beaujolais. They also tend to be harder to grow (need a cooler climate)and so are more expensive-like Burgundy and NZ Pinot Noir. Personally I love Pinot Noir and think both red and white Burgundy (made from Chardonnay) are the finest wines. But bloody expensive

Cheers Prof, the wife knew what they were, I didn't have a clue, I'm a pie and chips and ale man , red wines/any wines are relatively new to me, although I have tried some over the yrs, a former workmate recommended I try the ones I mentioned.

Wine white or red on 13:44 - Feb 27 with 1104 views | CanveySwan | Red wine all day long. Particular favourite is a French Cote du Rhone. Lidl’s are selling one at the moment for £4.50, nicer than the m & s £10 bottles. Health benefits of red wine in moderation.

I did't think we could buy wine in Wales at £4.50 a bottle due to the minimum unit price. Just shows I don't look hard enough.

Might be cos I live in Essex now, but I’m sure Lidl’s price match across all their stores.

Wine white or red on 13:58 - Feb 27 with 1080 views | Dr_Winston | You can't go wrong with a Chilean Merlot. Some are better than others, but I've never had a bad one. Bought an £8 bottle of something of the type from Aldi to take camping with Mrs Winston a couple of years ago and it was gone before we'd finished putting the tent up. Wish I could remember what it was.

Good value from Chile, but not a great Merlot fan. End up drinking a lot of Chilean Pinot Noir as good at £6-7, whereas NZ at least a tenner for same quality. You would probably like a Chilean Carmenere too Dr W

Any recommendations on a few nice white wines, Prof? I fancied one the other day with my scampi, but didn't have a bottle here.

More difficult to recommend a white in my mind Max. I don't like Pinot Grigio for example. I would go with a Chilean Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc -the latter will be sharper, almost a gooseberry taste. You could try a light red like Beaujolais or even a young (Joven) Rioja lightly chilled.

It was mistaken for Merlot for many years-most will be from Chile and most big supermarkets will stock one or two. Majestic wine do a few-Santa Rita 120 is a good Chilean range and have a Carmenere. There is one in Aldi (about £6) which I have tried and is decent, but patchy availability. It's not screamingly different from a Cabernet Merlot blend.
Wine white or red on 09:50 - Mar 2 with 900 views | Thrasher6 | I love a Chablis, but it doesn't come cheap! A nice inexpensive white is Bin65 (Lindemanns) which is a Chardonnay, and most supermarkets will stock it. Give it a go...has an almost bananary (if that's a word) taste. I'll be tasting a few of The Prof's & Rayners selections in due course.. [Post edited 2 Mar 2021 9:51]

Good choice. Sadly the even better Chardonnay-Based burgundy like Mersault and Puligny-Montrachet start at £30.
