Abysmal can we please start attacking teams. 3rd on goal difference. 17:09 - Nov 23 with 8050 viewsqprno1fan

with the talent at our disposal we should be smashing teams 3 or 4 most weeks. Why oh why does Harry insist on one up front at home. We are now officially the most boring team on the planet.

We won and kept a clean sheet but we need to do better at the other end.

Actually it was abysmal. So I've heard.

Just the way it goes. We could play the football version of the Harlem Globetrotters ...it won't guarantee a win. As has been said defending is huge part of the game.
The best teams can do all of these things

Yep almost every game and we were pretty boring in most of them.

You are off you rocker. We were far far far from boring the year we went up with Venables. That is just madness.

I don't think you did either, we scored plenty that season (77) at an average of nearly two a game, we're barely averaging 1 a game so far this season.

And the football under Venables was bloody awful mind numbing to watch as well .
His game plan was based on a very well drilled off side trap simple as that

Can remember Leeds away 1nil to us I think when the terraces were closed think Leeds got caught off side close to 30 times or more

It might not be the swashbuckling footabll we had under NW with Taarabt, but a very mean defence that has kept 10 clean sheets in 16 and a home ground that has witnessed 7 wins and a draw from 8 games is not to be sniffed at.
Its more workmanlike and efficient than your edge of your seat stuff we had in the promo year but so far its working for us.
If this is what we have to do to get promoted, then so be it.

To get back today's game, I agree with the poster who said it's churlish to complain...

But, I will whinge a bit. I'm guessing Casper was injured at half time (not sure how he got injured, assume he must've slipped over in the tunnel). Now, look at the first 45 minutes. We had I would say 6 or 7 shots, at least three of which were on target and either went in or forced a decent save from Hamer. Charlton, on the other hand, offered nothing. They were not one of those dreadful sides you see occasionally, like Sheff U the season we won the league who are almost incompetent, but they were clearly not an even remote threat - there was really no chance of them getting anything out of the game apart from a freak happening - a worldy, a pen, a red card for us.

So, you look at that and then you look at the centre of our midfield - Barton and O'Neil. One is probably the best midfielder in the league, the other one, while limited, has one hell of an engine. It is not going to be overrun by freaking Johnnie Jackson. So, at that point, surely Harry does one of two things:

1. Put on SWP or Traore on the wing, push Krancjar behind Austin.
2. Put on AJ and for this half, go 4-4-2 and win the game 3-0, as we should have done.

I would have preferred option two. Putting Henry on and having O'Neil in the attacking midfielder role against say, Leicester, I could understand. But for this game? Really? We bring on a player that makes us more defensive than we were in the first half where the opposition caused us absolutely no problems at all save for s couple of ill-advised passes by our own players?

Sorry, but I don't get it. I've found a lot of Harry's substitutions to be a bit baffling to be honest. Warnock would have had the team out there in the second half with orders to take this shower to the cleaners (a lovely mixed metaphor there, I'm sure you agree).

Where has Harry's famed attacking methodology gone? Because I can't see it anywhere. My conclusion is that he simply will not take chances this season. Just keep winning and don't ever take risks. That's fine, but it feels like this squad, which is the best in the division by some distance, has so much more to offer.

Bare bones.

All you remember about the season was the offside trap? Sorry mate, but I had largely forgotten he offside trap. All I remember was the fluid play and beautiful goals. The pinpoint accurate passing and players with skill and guile. The monsters at the back and the rock-solid defense. The competency of our corners and free kicks that were guarenteed to create chances. The larger-thean-life characters in the side. The joy of "Terry Venables Blue and White Army" ringing around Loftus Road. That is what I remember. I had a season ticket in the Elerslie Road in those days and I definitely never considered the team boring. I sat through the 1979 relegation side in the same seats and that was a side that produced some dull dull affairs. But the promotion season, that thought never crossed my mind.

Austin and SWP had good attempts towards the end and had they gone in, that would have been your 3-0.

Our performances might not be as exciting or entertaining as some would prefer. But they have been very effective indeed.

After 2 years of misery, I for one am happy that we are winning and deserve to be winning. One Nils will do, 2 or 3 nils would be nice but getting 3 points is the one and only goal for each match(no pun)

Totally agree with that. I said at H/T - take off Jenus (who was as usual doing nothing) and bring on AJ and we would tear Charlton (who never looked like scoring the whole game) to shreds. Couldn't believe it when he replaced Jenas with Henry. It's all very well "keeping it tight" and being a bit stronger defensively when you are a goal up with not long to go, but yesterday we adopted that approach for the whole of the second half. And ironically had we been more attacking they would have had less opportunities to attack us anyway instead of us sitting back and watching them try to play through us. I'm certain had we brought AJ on at H/T we'd have won three or four nil - which would have been a fairer reflection of the game.

To play 4-4-2 you need 2 excellent midfielders who are box to box. We have Barton but our other midfielders (Henry, O'Neill and the friendly ghost) are mediocre and more comfortable in a 5-2-3-1.

That said I thought Henry did well when he came on but he needs to learn to play the ball quicker and drive forward occasionally. It's a shame Samba Diakite is not fulfilling his promise as he could play in a central two I reckon.

After January 4-4-2 Austen and Defoe up front, 1 winger constantly switching side to side and stay with three in middle. Magic

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.

Ps your 5-2-3-1 means we don't play with a goalie - sort of mirror of Barcelona ?

We have a situation where Harry has taken a shambles of a football team and had to rebuild both in terms of attitude and morale over a few weeks. The result is 10 wins out of 15 and an ave of half a goal conceded per game. He has had to deal with plenty of injuries and some superb opposition keeping. Sure we could go 2 up front and be a bit more positive in substitutions. But how anyone can seriously complain given the turnaround is beyond belief. The OP needs to get a reality check.

It seems some on here have forgotten how bad we were last season. This team has been completely turned around. We need promotion, its as simple as that. Winning 1-0 for the rest of the season will do me.
My only concern ,which has already been mentioned on this thread, is that it's turning into a 3 horse race and we are currently third.. on goal difference. Our goal ratio could be the difference between automatic promotion or play offs.
Its a marathon not a sprint so hopefully we are pacing ourselves now then giving it all we got on the final lap and get over that finish line.
Great goal by Austin.
