The Church/ Chapel in Wales and attendance 09:44 - Mar 23 with 980 viewsonehunglow

It's a quiet day
Are we able to discuss church going on Wales given Nonconformism is at our very core
Don't forget Evan Robert's was ( almost) a Jack

My Gran's chapel in Mumbles was always full back in the day, my big sis got married there. When she (My dear gran) passed away and her frinds had gone too, the chapel, as far as I remember, went very quiet. It's still there because they rarely knock these buildings down but I don't know how busy it is.

Driving around the NPT area for work I see a lot of chapels that look obviously in decline and out of use. There are several in Skewen alone.

At the same time as church and chapels decline across Wales and the UK, other religions are growing, Islam is definitely.

Thanks
One of the greatest cultural sea changes of our lifetime
It's a fundamentally different Wales
Interesting to see Tramps or Killys views on this subject
Losing nonconformism has no doubt impacted upon Welshness
Weird it maybe

Both my children were Christened in a Church , holy water routine and all the prayers and sermons to boot , never had a problem and both nice Services looking back .

All my late and departed family are buried in a Church of England plot in our old village .
A walk around the gravestones and memories of past events will still resonate .

Sadly the only time I enter The House of God these days is for funerals of departed friends .

I did attend Sunday School way back in the day in the Church Hall , painting and fun time .

That property is now a housing estate , says it all .

If it was in Wales it would have been Church of Wales. Not Church of England.

This was explained to me by Tim an ex vicar who has since sadly passed. The Anglican Churches in wales broke away for the CoE a while back and the King or Queen were not the head of the church in these parts.

I can promise you all events I have documented happened in deepest Woolyback Land .

Any discussion over Politics and Religion is a minefield to get the upper hand at all times .
I will keep out of Religion beliefs and ideas , that culture is taking the World to implode .

Far deeper and ingrained thoughts on some radicals from that thinking and more deadly .

Not something i know a lot about.

Christianity in Wales dates from at least the 4th century, and by the 7th century Roman and Celtic missionaries had converted the entire country. When the pagan Anglo-Saxons invaded Britain in the 5th century, Wales became one of the strongholds of the Celtic church.

It makes me sad to see the chapels and churches fall down all around us.
But i never go …..so cant really complain, can i ?

If the battle of the Milvian bridge had gone the other way then Christianity may never hve made it to these islands. We can all thank Constantine the great for the spread West of that religion. If not for him we may still be having Pagan rituals with Druids.

My grans chapel was ruled strictly hy her vicar, John Davies, I remember him being very strict at Sunday school. I was forced to go to Sunday school, not because it was to save my mortal soul but just to give the adults some peace and quiet Sunday mornings. After a few months most of us used to sneak off and play football.
