"Thousands of sites potentially contaminated with toxic chemicals in Britain have never been checked by councils, a BBC investigation has found.
Nine out of 10 "high-risk" areas have not been tested by councils responding to a BBC Freedom of Information request and scientists fear they could pose a health risk as they are thought to contain substances such as lead or arsenic."

I worked on the railways.Having finished work I fancied a coffee and a cake in a railway arch in Hackney. It had been raining.
The cakes were exposed and there was water of the cake plate. It was water from the roof.I declined the cake and explained the water although clear had permeated through the railway ballast of about 1-2m and sat on the felted roof and only got through after ponding. It was likely bacteria faeces and rats urine were in the ballast.
I told the owner to throw away all the cakes. He effectively told me to mind my own business.
I reported the natter to Hackney council environmental department who struggled to understand what I told them using the word ' leachate' not rainwater.
I heard nothing for 10 weeks when they rang me to ask if I was satisfied at their service.and could they close the file. I asked them what they had done and had they visited the cafe. They said no. I gave them a totally dissatisfied grading. They were tick box fillers.

Councils have to list all contaminated land sites. There are numerous Environmental consultants that monitor these sites if paid. If left unattended they need analysis. This often occurs during desks studies when plans are made to develop the sites. You see these when buying a house to check is is not built a on an old landfill site for example.
A site might have heavy metals but these element ars not mobile. Mobility come from water or air ( dust).
In assessment of harm contaminated sites ars considered using three aspect with regard to public hazard
SOURCE. Are there hazardous materials?
PATHWAY . Are they mobile? How?
RECEPTOR. Is there a human or animal receptor of this contamination?
Particular care is required concerning groundwater bodies. Arsenic can migrate in water while heavy metals cannot. .Asbestos is mobile in dust not water. For example.

I used to walk the dog with a guy who monitored underground water courses for DEFRA, he said that underground water changes it's course almost continually and it was a good thing because it kept him and his team in a job.
He was monitoring a site in Gloucestershire where a new housing development had completely changed the underground rivers and waterways and were having to map out the anticipated effects, he said that if they had been asked to do the work before the building started he could have anticipated some of the problems.
In this case we seem to be flying blind? | |

Heavy metals are not mobile as I explained. U is a post industrial nation with a lot of pollutants. Even on Contaminated land you can grow and eat your potatoes as long as they is a layer of 1 or 2 m of inert clay capping.
The is blocks any 'pathway' and well out of root action range. Much of south Wales has these problems. 24/7 pumping is not a sustainable solution and a clean up might be cheaper for the quarry you mentioned. | |
