🔴 Likely candidates for the Swans job on 09:05 - Feb 23 by RichardO | Sheehan for me. The forwards press was so much better yesterday they got quickly into shape first before then closing Blackburn down properly add to that the midfield have the pace and tenacity to back that press up when needed while using those skills to recover if good play does cause problem, nice to see our issues further up the pitch not in our defensive third. That change in the forwards press made a big difference meaning Blackburn resorted to the long ball. Blackburn came to attack and we took advantage of that getting in behind themselves as in QPR game, question is could we deal with the teams that park the bus and try counterattacking enough pace in the middle now. |
Long term? What if it was a choice between him and any of the people in the betting favs?

My initial response would be give him until the end of the season, he did well last time but we didn't see what his response to the heavy defeat to Southampton as Luke William's took the reigns directly after. He may have learnt a bit more under William's on the folly of going all out attack after seeing us being picked off by teams by not consolidating what we have, It was nice to see us holding our ground against Blackburn attack both at the start and after we scored the first they tried to put press on us but we set up correctly to withstand their expected responses. In the past we have seen both Jackett and Cooper spend the last fifteen minutes of games defending points the latter doing it with very little pace up front reducing the option's to relieve pressure, against Blackburn the change of the front three gave us that option. If fans could see the problems that William's tactics have produced then surely Sheehan is well aware of them the inclusion of O'Brien's quality helps in the middle just as Allen's does but as we know Allen cannot be relied on to stay injury free. So in answer to the question I would give him the job at least until the end of the season but maybe wait to see his response to a loss. If he is doing well keep him in the loop with reference to the long term plan to make additions to the squad in key areas to replace those players who may not be here next season, Add a bonus for keeping us up with a view of a contract for future seasons. The weekends result has a huge bearing on that. Can't see us rushing to appoint anyone soon. After we've played Leeds those odds I guess will have shifted as we have a tough little run ahead.

Might well have been our best 90 minutes of the season. That Sheehan can raise the levels that much with the same players will probably convince the club that they don't have to rush into appointing a replacement.

Agree but that little bit of quality and pace in the middle of midfield has seemingly solved one of our problems with the "transition in play" to use William's words from attack to defense and vice versa. That problem in midfield created big gaps between the three sections, attack, midfield and defense, add that with the over committing of the defenders forward with no viable cover to stifle counter attacks. Was nice to see all three sections able to do their initial jobs properly and being able to link the play to keep on top of the game.

If a new guy isn't appointed after a certain amount of days, bookies pay out for the caretaker. I think those odds suggest that Sheehan is going to be atleast caretaker until the amount of days they give pass.

Agree but Sheehan's set up seem to be able to attack with more purpose and also not succumb to the pressure brought by Blackburn. The balance in games swing on odd moments in play, Blackburn had two good chances early in the game but didn't take them but we did reduce those chances by having a mindset to defend the lead gained as opposed to continuingly surrendering silly goalsklike early in games by putting ourselves in dangerous situations at the back or thinking we had got back in games throwing caution to the wind only to concede goals within minutes of a recovering goal losing any advantage gained. Another game, another team with different problems and tactics to overcome. [Post edited 24 Feb 17:43]

Completely agree with this. Performance was more important if anything. The 7 or 8 point gap we had over the bottom 3 would be a fairly safe zone under normal circumstances. Not the case when you’re losing every week and playing like you’re going to keep on losing. I don’t think we actually need that many points. Keep playing anywhere near the way we did Saturday and we should be safe fairly soon. I think too soon to make a call on Sheehan, but the intensity and cohesion were miles better.
🔴 Likely candidates for the Swans job on 20:24 - Feb 24 with 1582 views | Dr_Winston | The club will be acutely aware that their last three managerial appointments haven't exactly proven to be stellar ones. It's vitally important that they get this next one right. If that means not rushing things, taking the time to look through all the reasons why the previous incumbents failed, understand and acknowledge why attendances have fallen and basically reconsider the thought processes that led us to appointing the likes of Martin and Williams in the first place, then so be it. Sheehan has given them a bit of breathing space to do so.

Foolish to draw serious conclusions after just one match of course, but it was a game that provided heavy evidence to suggest that those in the "Grimes was slowing us down" camp might have had a point. There's no way that he'd have covered the kind of ground, physically imposed himself on the midfield or played the kind of game that both Franco and O'Brien did. not even when he was on it. Like you say, we were a little uncertain for the first 10-15 minutes or so but really grew in confidence after that. If we can start games in the same vein then there's no reason why we shouldn't be looking up the table instead of nervously down it.

We have seen this season and in previous ones how a game can be flipped on it's head, tactical changes, individual duels won and lost, set piece problems, break away goals or errors or a total loss of shape throughout the team. I liked how Sheehan's setup and thinking meant the workload was reduced for players all over the pitch. When the ball was lost, being into a defensive shape as quickly as possible meant Blackburn weren't allowed to play out from the back with us shutting down players paths forward first resulting in their long ball which given Cabango and Darling aerial prescence the midfield and the fullbacks were in good positions to compete. As you said the worst thing from a midfielder is to constantly drop back deep and sorely affects their ability to get forward, similarly if your forwards cannot compete in the air when you play long balls then the midfield get caught too far forward trying to support them and wingers out to wide are wasted Our flanks have been targeted so often but it is no surprise if the defender get goal side of a winger in a good position, which they did,.they can work out how to be effective against them they cannot do that if they lose sight of them or give them space in areas where they can use their skills best. I think we nullified a load of threats all over the park stifling them forcing them to play in a way which allowed us to get on top and stay on top when our quick passing good movement helped us be competitive as a team all over the park but especially down the spine of the team they rarely played through us. Think a number of managers have tried to accommodate Grimes for his supposed skill with varied degrees of sussess but ultimately have come up short. Whether that is because of the player or the tactics employed by the coach remains to be seen. I'm sure the team will have some losses under Sheehan tenure but we do seen better suited with the players now available to stand up to pressure trying to be imposed by other teams rather than a team lacking a backbone. You seem to identify specifics in play and formation that most of us don't see, unless it's blindingly obvious. I've supported the Swans for 62 years, but any match report I'd be asked to provide, would be very much more simplistic than yours. Simple answer to your first question would be no Swanse Senior league division two would be my highest level with a young team that graduated from Division Five. Played down the field or school since I was a nipper. Growth spurt as 12 or 13 and learning one or two tricks lead to being captain in the school team and at times the senior team playing in the centre midfield. Did play 5 aside with work colleagues who played at higher levels. Basically a bossy boots with little skill but got the ball down to players who were better than me. Did help I could compete well in the air.

Providing he doesn’t loose the next 3 games,I can’t believe anyone imagines for a single minute that Coleman and the board, are not going to go with Alan Sheehan until the end of the season. ‘Cause he’s cheap innit? Obviously if AS is a raving success, who could blame them. But, it will bring into focus the real ambitious of the new owners. If they have real intentions of investing and a return to The Premier league, do they take a chance on an untried inexperienced manager, or concentrate from now until summer, on carrying out their due diligence on someone capable of delivering that vision?

Best performance of the season was the first half against QPR and that was orchestrated by the chef and the kitman apparently. At some point the players need to take a serious look at themselves and admit they are capable for a lot more than they’ve been showing regardless of who the manager is.

Agree about players but against Sheffield Wednesday Tymon was having plenty of ball and as a team we seemed untroubled but after 30mins it looked as if William's was berating Tymon telling him he should be further up on the flank, it made him almost redundant didn't get the ballon the front foot and ended up laying the ball back towards our goal, second half it looked as if Delacroix wanted him to come to receive the ball but he wasn't having it as he was doing what he was told to do by the manager.Sheff W just sat back and waited for the mistake.

This was the only thing I found frustrating on Saturday. You may not like the manager or the tactics, but at least do the basics regardless. Showing for the ball, physical aggression, wanting it at least as much as the opposition. Tactics and formations are down to the manager. Everything above should be a given whoever is in charge. I’m still happy Williams is gone though.
