Welsh FA offer Merthyr £6m to join Welsh Premier league on 21:30 - Jan 16 with 878 views | GVJack | The Martyrs wouldn't consider this surely? Yes money is appealing in the short term, but would lack ambition. They're looking good for promotion this year, so would only two tiers away from being promoted to the national league. FAW would be better spending the money on existing clubs within the Welsh league structure and grass roots.

The Welsh FA have £6M to bribe one club, yet need the Cymru Cup to fund grass roots football in Wales.

I agree that this money shoukd not even be offered. However Merthyr will never be a football league club, simply not going to happen without Wrexham style investment. Pipe dream. More likely scenario is that Merthy will go bust and beg to be part of the Cymru Prem. Their fan base is 500 to 700 attendees over last 10 years, around same as Colwyn Bay last season.

The Cymru need the big South Wales teams to get into gear and look for growth and fill their own cloths. Merthyr needs all the help it can get. Even the open cast is shut now. We in Wales have a serious problem with a lack of ambition and drive. The TNS guy has it and Owestry in the Cymru league powerhouse while Rhyl, Bangor, Barry Llanelli and Bridgend are trailing them buy some distance. Merthyr are beating up small English village teams. The WAG found £5m from somewhere and presumably non football people decided a Museum in Wrexham was the best way to support Welsh football. I do not know who did the thinking on that given that the FAW are now saying Wales has the lowest percentage of good artificial training pitches in the whole of Europe. Welsh rugby is embracing shrinkage. FAW want to grow, [Post edited 16 Jan 22:41]

None of Bangor, Rhyl and Llanelli have been in the Cymru Prem for some years. I agree though, be great to see all 3 back there. Barry and Penybont are there as pretty permanent fixtures now. Haaverfordwest have splashed cash and made top 6 this year. Ferry, Cardiff Met also from south this season. I notice that Newport area has no team in Cymru Prem. FAW are wrong to try to force the issue with Merthyr, be better to have the likes of Llanelli, Carmarthen and Ammanford.

Bums on seats is the problem and FaW o are on the case. Merthyr bring with them a few hundred supporters Putting money into HFW and Carmarthen is money down the drain unless it comes with a rich backer. The league has not grown because the small teams beat the sleeping giants. All teams ideal would be in c urban centres with populations in excess of 40000 allowing crowds up to 1000. 8 " elite teams planing each other 4 times. All would have nice stadiums and well drained aying surface and a rudimentary academy. Barry, Rhyl,Bangor, Merthyr, Port Talbot, Bridgend TNS Llanelli or similar. No relegation. Bottom team to apply for re election. Some other team could only come up if facilities are adequate. Colwyn Bay Cardiff Met. The weakling have to be pruned as with the regional rugby. Investing in them would be money down the drain.

You make some very interesting suggestions there. I think 1000 people per game is achievable in the coming years with the relaunch for 26/27. The overall playing standard is improving for sure. The facilities are also much improved. The FAW should take a listen to what you are saying, good post.

It's easy to write teams off and talk about restructuring when it's not your club. How would you feel if it was your club they were removing to create a space for another. Top flight membership should be earned not given away particularly with a couple of million bribe.

This is 'wokeland personified" where " feelings" of people involved are of more importance than progress and quality. Eight teams with 1000 fans each will get this league moving and Merthyr would add a feisty element for sure. They would earn respect. Teams in towns of little over 10,000 people bring not a lot to the table. [Post edited 17 Jan 14:39]

Calm down mun. I said the post was interesting and the FAW should take a look at his proposals. I stand by that. I did not say i agreed with every aspect of his proposal, not least because i have not tried to think through every detail. Of course promotion and relegation is part and parcel of the game, but when you are making year on year investments to establish your new look national league then you might want to protect your investments. As things stand about 1/6 of the annual investment gets relegated every year, so to build you might want to limit relegations for a few years to keep your investments in play. And then resume later maybe. Cricket and rugby do ok without relegations in some leagues. Whats your team then ?

The Merthyr deal is probably v dependent on the Eufa place deal going through as that is where the funding will come from. If t looks as if Birch and co will block it . [Post edited 17 Jan 19:10]

As I said nothing was cut and dried, there was just to much opposition from sensible supporters of mainstream football clubs.
