Kinski and Bergvall. Time was when we were so astute.

Time was when aspiring players wanted to come here. We had little competition. Now, Brighton, Bournemouth and Chelsea are all much more attractive.

Poll: How many wins this season sweepstake

Yes, but our heads of recruitment then are now the directors of football at Newcastle and Forest.

For a club our size, getting the recruitment of players and managers right is all important. We can't afford expensive errors and we have made a lot of them recently.

It's not just about how much you spend. Take a player like Ola Aina at Forest. They got him on a free transfer and he has been brilliant for them this season. They also got one of the best central defenders in the world, Milenković, at the peak of his career, for just £12 mill, and, of course, one of the best managers. That's down to great recruitment, not how big or rich the club was.

It's all about geeks watching football all day on their laptops, and collating copious spreadsheets and Powerpoint presentations.

I'm sure we could all do just as good a job.....

In fairness its not all about geeks looking at videos & data although that is part of it, it is just a starting point.

Saints have a vast network of scouts who go and watch the players that get flagged up in person and give their reports.

Truth is there is no cast iron formula, it is a numbers game, for every gem you unearth there is 6-10 players that don't reach those heights , some do ok and others fail miserably.

But then there are loads of players who have failed miserably at one club and then succeeded at another, Kevin Danso for instance, deemed a failure here and now worth £25 million and highly desired

How come other clubs like Bournemouth and Brighton do the 'number's game' better than us?
