For those who think Sport Republic want a Championship club 08:39 - Jan 3 with 1529 viewsPatfromPoole

I just saw this article about Bristol City's latest financial results.

Despite selling Alex Scott to Boscombe for around £20 million and having a pretty good Cup run, they still lost over £3 million in the year.

They lost over £20 million in the year before that.

The Championship is a great League to play in, but it is almost impossible to be profitable whilst playing in it.

Saints averaged about 8,000 more than Bristol City did last season, in ticket sales terms thats about £4-5 Million in income, plus the associated add ons such as merchandising & sponsorship up lifts.

It is possible to survive in the Championship, but to do well you need the parachute payments and therefore need to get back up within 2 years.

You are right Sport Republic need Saints to be in the Premier league, for most in the Premier League to survive is about buying players relatively cheaply and selling them on at a profit, when that process goes wrong then it all goes pear shaped as Leicester and ourselves to name just a couple of teams and a host of others in the Championship, it is impossible to compete.

One of the problems with the PL is that membership (joining and annual) is fearsomely expensive.

Investment in players in the season of promotion and the next three or four is crucial and we have seen some clubs risk points deductions under the PSR rules in order to acquire and play expensive players.

SR now have three clubs. Whilst I cannot imagine that a Turkish or French club needs the sort of investment that a PL does, they still need to be supported. That detracts from what they might commit to Saints.

Add in a poor two seasons of recruitment (players and managers) and the investment now required is too huge for SR. Whether they like it or not we are a Champ team next season and this will test their resolve (and balance sheet).

I keep being told they have the money.

But PSR rules preclude them from spending it.

I think that while my 2nd sentence is correct, I have my doubts about the 1st sentence.

That’s over £210 million I find that hard to believe.

They would have fell foul to FFP rules of the championship ?
