French law is different to English law, intent as opposed to consent, I guess that is why lots of them pleaded not guilty.

"Dominique Pelicot has been found guilty and sentenced to 20 years in prison for drugging his ex-wife, Gisèle, raping her and inviting dozens of men to also abuse her over nearly a decade, along with other charges.
Pelicot had admitted the charges against him.
He was on trial with 50 other men, the majority of whom denied charges of rape. The court in the French city of Avignon found 47 of the men guilty of rape, two guilty of attempted rape, and two guilty of sexual assault.
The defendants now have 10 days to appeal."

Gisele deserves a break after what she has been through but you would think that at some point she would need to be interviewed about her ex husband in relation to other cases he is potentially linked with (assuming she hasn't been already), was his clothes buzzing of ethanol, did he lose items of clothing back in the day, his behaviour at a given time etc etc.
Perhaps Gisele was busy getting on with life, children, work, other things etc and did not notice anything (if indeed there was anything too notice, who knows if this trial is just part of the Pelicot story or if it is the whole story). [Post edited 19 Dec 19:53]

I’ve not followed the case and have only read the headlines, as to be honest it’s abhorrent. I can’t get my head around why someone would do this to their wife and why the other offenders would want to be party to such an act. It’s utterly sick. | | | |

There was a theory but Dominique dismissed it and Gisele didn't think it was the case but wasn't sure.
A lot of the offenders were just that offenders low life's, not Mr Everyday I would say as apparently coined by the press | |

It’s an horrific story of how evil men can be and how vulnerable women still are .
She could have had anonymoity and waived it to highlight this problem
