Possession Based football. 09:40 - Dec 14 with 5248 views | onehunglow | Interesting article from Souness on how boring he sees this . He quotes RM on saying he’s embarrassed to only be on five points but won’t change his police . Possession stats mean nothing in reality. Most impressive passing stats involve the ball passed in the defending third and shows most passing to be backwards or sideways . It must be frustrating for a striker these days as they are not given the ball when they should . We are so typical of this . My opinion is that it is the primary reason so many home fans have walked . The fare is simply boring . Fans want goals, excitement in front of goals . Endless sideways passing really is boring . It’s time .

Losing is still losing. Nothing wrong with possession football BUT it has to be possession with a purpose, not passing for the sake of it. Arsenal weren't mucking about on the edge of their own box, they were pressing high and put Palace under a lot of pressure.

We aren’t a Russell Martin team anymore. Recycling along the back line to create space to carry it forward in the opposite side isn’t possession without purpose. We often do this, some see it as aimless passing around the back. We aren’t good enough to play Martinez/Rodgers/Laudrup type possession football where every pass seems to be a probing one. We tried Michael Duff football and apart from the few weeks where he abandoned his principles and we actually knocked the ball around a bit, it was worse than anything we’ve seen for years.

Duff's football did show some promise with some good results with Platino, Paterson and Grimes in the middle until it fell apart home against Leicester where we tried a defending game with that very weak defensive set up in the middle, seems the baby then got thrown out with the bath water. Downhill for him after that. So we have seen glimpses of better games under Duff, not too many, and also under Martin and Williams but ultimately without a strong defensive setup especially in the middle of the park we are suffer once teams attack us, we have compromised our defensive in the search for goals, I am hoping that William's has now learnt enough about his team to rectify the problems. It won't be possible in every game but I want to see it in the majority of games, we are picking up points away but dropping them at home.

There was a little spell between Cardiff and Leicester where he tried a more possession based approach. Either side of that was attritional dross. Not massively unlike Steve Cooper, but without the Ayew it needed to scrape results. I agree Williams needs to find a balance. He’s proven he can set us up to defend and to attack, he hasn’t managed to do both together yet. Needs to sort that out ASAP. This Christmas period is going to be tough, he’s going to have to manage a squad without much to it outside the starting eleven and a handful of others.

As you say it was a small window with Duff but he was nowhere near having a settled team, as for Cooper he had the same issues of getting the balance right, he had a havsettled side missing one or two players and good enough to get into the playoffs twice,. Martin ditch that defensive set up but did he every get a settled side, forever swapping players around in back line. Williams seems to have a settle starting eleven at least with players able to play at a standard but missing a number of players to push for a playoff place this year, he is not far off but maybe he needs to look at what is and what has unsettled that balance between attack and defence since relegation.

It's not aimless if there's a point to it. When people say possession football is the only way to success, it's not true and possession alone doesn't win games. There is much more to it and not least the ability to turn possession into chances and then convert some chances. I have seen plenty of games where having the lions share of possession hasn't helped us.

Nobody says it’s the only way to success or possession alone wins games though. You’ve also seen us have the lions share of possession and win games. We have it most weeks. I’d guess we’ve lost every game we’ve had less possession. We also have more shots (in my opinion that roughly translates to creating most chances) than our opposition most weeks. There are some obvious exceptions to that. In my view, the fact we’re blunt up front is costing us more than the fact we have the ball more than opponents

Your last line is exactly the point. All the possession means nothing if you can't score. Goals win games, having more possession should make that more possible but not if the majority of your own possession is spent pfaffing around in your own third. That kind of possession can cost you goals. Edited to add, Anthony O'Conell just summed it up nicely..." we're winning the possession stats but BEHIND in all the important stats" [Post edited 21 Dec 13:11]

The point I was trying to make was the possession is a bit of a red herring. We’re not winning games because we have awful striking options. People are blaming it on us having 55% of the ball instead of Vipotnik not anticipating Tymons cross when all Tymon could do from that position was put a cross in. An open goal if he’d known where and when to run. Not just him, Bianchini was worse today and those two and Cullen are our striking options.
