Christmas presents . A plea 10:09 - Oct 17 with 1468 viewsonehunglow

No ,you don’t want
Socks
Slippers
Computer game
Next voucher
Garden centre token
Glenfiddich
A good Pomerol
Or gym membership.

Tell those who send presents to you that rather than waste their money on things you don’t need, give the money to a charity likeMotor Neurone or Brain Tumour trust . You dont need anything. If you did, you’d get it yourself so instruct them to donate to the charity and have them send you the receipt for doing so.
These people need the money and need it now .
Do it

So, we’re getting to that time of year now.
Ban Halloween , Ban Bonfire night, Ban Christmas and ban New Year’s Eve, it’s the time of year when miserable people come out to play.

I really don't believe that people should have the audacity to say what I want or not and charity donations are a matter of choice, how much and when if at all.

The main pressure of Christmas ,especially for those of modest means is what to buy and for whom. Then,it’s what is paid and what they’d want .
Some give cash which is then reciprocated .
It is nothing to do with misery or miserable people but it makes me miserable to see such comments .Halloween. Fun. I saw a thread recently about protecting young people . It’s why we go on about danger and to avoid evil .

Bonfight night. Yeah, surefire way of torturing animals . It’s fun for kids apparently .

We all know you don't like Christmas but it's personal choice. We do a toned down Christmas in our house AND we give to charty. Which charity is our choice.

Halloween, bleh and I totally agree about fireworks, being a dog lover and us having 2 four legged friends, I would ban fireworks at home and only have organused displays. But all of these things are meant to be fun, for kids especially. I'm not going to be a Grinch

People forget it’s all about the lickle baby Jesus who had to be born in a stable because all the hotel rooms were booked up for Christmas.

Saturnalia, in December in the Roman world, it was Saturnalia, until Constantine anyway.

There was no Travelodge or Premier Inn's available in Baby Jesus's days and The Grand and The Dragon were fully booked.

Children are already spoilt.
They open presents then lose interest before the wrapping paper has been collected
The worst off go into debt to buy gifts they can’t afford having been pressured by media and peer pressure to get presents .

Misery…is people, lonely at Christmas pressured by the cretins amongst us to stop being a curmudgeon and enjoy Christmas and all the shyte that it brings . Some take their own lives as a result of it all.
The meaning of Christmas is long and gone .Its commercial porn now .
Bin fire night . Yeah, people losing limbs, pets terrorised into running off and for what….pretty bangers and Roman candles .
And this is supposed to make us happy ?

The replies to my thread have been very disappointing

Forget Christmas and indeed your birthday presents too and donate to causes that save lives not clutter them with mindless crap

My point stands
You want something then we get it
Why pressure people into buying stuff you don’t really need .
I do t like what Christmas has become . The grotesque spectacle it has become .
My opinion alright

The waste at Christmas is nothing less than appalling . And we have food banks .

Don't be silly.

The Lord knows I've not got much time for Perchy, but Society as a whole would be better off if people stopped spending money on crap that doesn't matter and maybe put it towards things that did.

I lost a very good friend to Cancer on Monday. If a couple of million quid that might otherwise have been spent on Lynx Gift sets got donated to Cancer Research instead it might make a difference.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Tell me about it , sister gone through breast cancer , gladly still alive and kicking thankfully .
But surely the Goverment should be putting more money into Cancer Research .

Understand the Lynx Box sets are a token gesture of wrapping paper and thought .

Still have my multi pack 5 pairs of socks from Primark and a box of chocs from my children .
That still is enough for me them just being there .

Xmas , bah humbug , have not got through Hallowen and Bonfire Night yet .

All reliant on charity .
No government funding ,just donations keep them going
1000 quid really helps

Wjen I said toned down, I meant it. We don't buy piles of food, we buy enough. We don't buy piles of presents and we make lists for each other so anything we buy is needed not just wanted. Our son is 16 now, he usually gets clothes, shoes, useful stuff because he isn't a child anymore.
None of us drink alcohol but we usually go out for a family meal to our now favourite place, La Casona in Skewen.

Now charity, on September 7th i did a MacMillan mighty hike. I lost my siste to cancer last year and she worked for MacMillan. We have several charities we support including the dog rescue centre "West Wales Poundies" which where we adopted our second dog from 4 months ago.

Now I'm not trying to make myself out to be a siant of some kind but merely pointing out that you can enjoy Christmas without all the expense and waste. It can still be a family time spent with loved ones.

In the end though, to each their own. We do what we're happy with and we wouldn't try and tell others how they should enjoy their life, a life that is far too short and all too often miserable so people should have their fun while they can, whichever way suits them. As long as it's legal of course.

We don’t need anything at all.
We don’t need people to buy for us
People should not simply look to be happy at Christmas
The pressure sure is deadly.
Literally

I was appealing to those who would admit to buying and accepting tut when the money can be used to save lives .

I stand by every word

People should look to be happy at any time of year. There's plenty of misery around.

We can look to be happy and still try to be good people, they are not mutually exclusive things.

To be quite honest, why do you feel entitled to tell people how to live their lives? We all have pressures, we all have shite in our lives. We are allowed some time offf from the misery.

Although in principle you are probably right about most of us, it’s far too puritanical an outlook for me. A bit if self indulgence over the festive period is good for us.

That’s me though, a completely selfish bar steward😁

That's the thing, I don't think I'm on the wrong track. We don't have exorbitant Christmases, we aren't pressured to buy "stuff" by our son who is quite level headed. Christmas doesn't stress us because we recognise there are more important things.

We don't preach to others about them though. We do sometimes look on in disgust!
