More hotels needed 17:59 - Oct 16 with 1344 views | AnotherJohn | It seems only a few short weeks ago that the Labour Party promised to phase out the use of hotels for "irregular" migrant accommodation, which they said would be possible when they "smashed the gangs". This was initially presented as something that could be achieved in about a year. At the same time, senior party figures stated that the use of migrant barges and military bases to house migrants would be discontinued. More recently, Ministers have conceded that three years is a more realistic time scale for phasing out hotels. The letting of new five year contracts to run two migrant processing centres also suggests that the realisation is dawning that illegal immigration will be a long-term problem. Now an investigation by Times journalists has revealed that the recent influx of cross-channel migrants has used up most of the "buffer" of vacant hotel beds that government finances as a reserve, and that the Home Office is seeking to contract anew with hotels the Tories had stopped using and find new hotels to put to this use. Quite where this leaves all the billions Labour promised to save is a matter of uncertainty. In the French camps the policies of the "friendly one" seem to have been very helpful to the people smugglers. https://www.lbc.co.uk/news/asylum-seekers-immigration-bibby-stockholm-hotels/#:~

He’s sending death threats to Nigel Farage so he’ll probably be welcomed in with open arms. The whole situation is out of control.

More hotels needed on 00:30 - Oct 17 with 1158 views | Robbie | So much for Starmers pledge in his election manifesto to stop the small boats . A task so far out of control more hotels needed , yet he promised he would deal with it . His very first call was to scrap the Rwanda scheme the day after Election , so the deterrent to stop the illegals was further weakened , great call so even more now arriving daily . No Leader of any Political Party will make the maybe necessary big call and close the door. Labour and Local Councils need to finance these problems , who pays for the hotels and expenditure involved . Starting point to look at is your Council Tax Bill per annum and increasing every year . Would not mind paying my way but why are local children in my area being taught and educated in Portacabins , supposed to be a quick fix whilst other options were considered . Well done to Llanelli residents who took on and fought for The Stradey Park Hotel to be closed down as a asylum seekers residence , a total badly thought out plan for that area . Shout loud enough you might be heard as in the Stradey Park issue . No. 10 and their occupants past and present are hard of hearing though sadly .

More hotels needed on 12:45 - Oct 17 with 1024 views | ReslovenSwan1 | The Rwanda scheme was working I recall reading with immigrants heading to the RoI in big numbers with Irish alarm.. UK needs a dual citizenship with newly arrived immigrants given 3 year work visas to work in unpopular jobs in agriculture care homes and recycling centers. This is what the Arabs do. It cannot be right that all you need to earn protection of the UK state for 2-3 years is to turn up on a boat . The prospect of a work visa and a period of hard honourable graft for all fit men and women 18-55 would see crossing fall like a stone. We can use these immigrants if they are prepared to graft. No one of right mind would think Labour would do nothing and massage the figures with a mass free pass to " clear the backlog" . [Post edited 17 Oct 12:50]

I think Starmer is getting hoisted by his own petard, he spent hours and hours in Parliament asserting that Tory ineptitude was to blame, inferring that things would improve on his watch because they could not get any worse. Binning the Rwanda scheme without replacing it and saying he would empty the hotels has rather backfired. Opposition is easy and governing is difficult.

Because they've had 20+ years of free education , it doesn't take or need a rocket scientist to come up with a workable strategy to stop them .

You would think that during 14 years of govt they would have come up with a working strategy. 14 years is a long time, it's 56 times longer than 3 months. The last govt had 56 times longer than this govt to do something

Freedom of movement came in as a result of John Major signing the Maastricht Treaty which came in to force under Blair. Where he went wrong was underestimating the number of migrants who’d come here from Eastern Europe and failing to introduce cans on the numbers (which could only be applied for a limited transitional period). The really big increase in migration has taken place over the last 5 years, the number in that period is down to the last government, the figures over the last few years are huge and record breaking and much larger than what we saw under Blair. Our criminal justice system is a mess and we’ve lost sight of what we should be doing, we should be deporting people and stopping them coming in. [Post edited 18 Oct 9:08]

Agree with most of this. The Blair and Brown governments did underestimate the scale of immigration from the Eastern EU countries, and one factor there was the poor advice coming from immigration studies research groups, especially the one led by Christian Dustmann at UCL. Their various "findings" over many years about trends in numbers arriving and beneficial economic impact mostly look very shaky now. I think the Tories bought in too much to the economic benefits claims, and listened too much to what big business wanted, Johnson recently admitted that after the pandemic fears about labour shortages and inflation led the government to make wrong decisions about numbers of visas granted. I also think we faced difficult times internationally and that the three nationality-specific immigration schemes for Afghanistan, Hong Kong and Ukraine added to our problems. I broadly supported all three, but if we went with these we needed to tighten up in other areas. The criminal justice system is a mess, but I'd say the civil law system is even worse, especially the use of judicial review to limit what government and public bodies can do in areas such as deportation. Of course, that links up to current debates about the relationship between domestic law and international treaty obligations.

Neither of them are very long. Doubt either Stalin or Putin would hit 5’5 on the tape measure even with the silly high heels putin wears.
