I would have to confess to having only a rudimentary knowledge of tactics, so without any impied sarcasm, I wanted to ask, 'What is it that we are trying to set up to do?"
I know we have some very informed people on the board, so I would be very interested to hear what our intentions are.
From my uninformed position, I am struggling to see our approach and identity.
What I see is a scarily empty midfield, exposed defenders, and a lack of edge up front. There were periods in the Hull game that I saw something good shining through. Quick transitions, attacking intent, and the ability to apply real pressure. But beyond that, I just cannot see what the grand plan is.

I know absolutely diddly sqaut about tactics, but as was mentioned earlier I don't think we have the talent to play the type of football Marti wants. But he keeps flogging that obvious dead horse, the question is how long will he perserver before this nag is sent to the glue factory and we play something more basic, more at the level of the players we have.

I still have lots of faith. In Marti, the squad, the rationale used to bring in players. Brentford, Palace, Fulham didn’t get success quickly. It’s replanting a garden and with getting the variables correct- the fruits don’t get seen straightaway. Chair coming back, JCs too, Colback too, Varane (still to prove himself) too. Each week that goes by is a week for the better of players knowing each other. It won’t be a pretty season, but it’s a medium term plan. We will come right with hard work, hard talk and as per Clive’s Derby report players getting stuck in across more aspects and carrying the piano. |  |

many times we get caught trying to play from the back, teams know what we will do, wait and pounce on us. we create chances but lack an out and out goal scorer , goal hanger , whatever but a scorer who can get 20+ on their own.

That first line says it all. Every game I go to I can't see what we are trying to do because I'm convinced the players don't.
Inverted full backs, false 9s, false 10s, rotation and pivot blah blah blah. It's not difficult, win the fcking ball and get it as quickly as possible into the opposition penalty area.

I want to feel persuaded, but we lack a goal threat, our midfield is flimsy and palatially spacious, we get cut open easier than the half-time oranges, and we are physically uncompetitive. Where are the bottle and battle and cutting edge coming from? If you took Madsen into the trenches with you, the trench would fill itself in! [Post edited 9 Oct 18:45]

I agree we're really struggling with the style and not sure we have the players to pull it off AND I'm not sure we have the physicality required to hold your own in this league (a bad combo). But also it's early, young(ish) players, spine missing, and hopefully they'll improve - just to be balanced.
Two more specific points that I don't get about the tactics (more likely to be because I'm not tactically knowledgeable, but asking as a 'punter' looking at what seems to be the bleeding obvious):
1. Inverting the full backs makes us awfully narrow and there's no danger at all of them overloading the opposition down the flanks
2. I would assume this style relies not just on passing but on moving too, and that part seems completely absent. We're so static, there is nothing difficult the oppo has to do to deal with our possession. I don't know if this is deliberate - ie players are holding certain positions because they've been told to, or whether it's a lack of bravery/physicality to execute the 'move' part of the plan, but it's very tough to watch.
I'd like nothing more than us starting to dominate possession and pick teams apart but it feels a long way off...
I do believe in Marti though. His team played exceptionally well at times in 2nd half of last season. | | | |
